Can coins corrode...

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 9,321 ✭✭✭✭✭
...while in the slab? Silly question, but I've been looking at certified coins on ebay and other auction venues recently and I've noticed quite an number with what appear to be corrosion spots. These have been mainly certified copper pieces. Since these slabs aren't air tight, I'm sure that moisture..ect... could conceivably get inside. Has anyone ever heard of this? Just curious... Leo

There are some members here that would contend that a coin that tones in the slab is corroding...

Look up Milk Spots under search.
And yes copper with spots is hard to belive in MS67RD.
Makes you wonder if something better than sonic sealing is needed.

Would anyone here be willing to pay extra for a guaranteed air tight slab?

I was thinking that this could occur if slabs get wet... like flood damage or if stored improperly. Hurricane Katrina comes to mind... L

Im not trying to cast dispersions on anyone... I've just noticed a number of early copper pieces that have obvious corrosion spots and/or green vertigris and they're certified. They're not stickered, but I doubt they'd make it into a slab like that in the first place. I would post links, but the acutions are still active... most I'm not tracking because the y're coins I wouldn't bid on anyway.

I'm trying to understand how this process might occur.

    1) I don't understand why you don't post links to the coins in question?

    2) Slabs are not hermetically sealed; thus, moisture can get in the slab and cause corrosion.

Steve... I don't want to negatively impact someone's auction by posting a picture of it (or a link) here and then talk about how bad the corrosion is, or disparage it in any way. Also, some of these coins are in major TPG slabs. I don't want to give the appearance of casting dispersions on them or their graders either. With this in mind, I would prefer to speak in hypotheticals or generalities. Most of us know what a corrosion spot or vertigris looks like on a 19th C copper coin. I'll try to get some images of a couple of my lower end coins up (if I still have them) as a learning tool. Leo

Does a tree fall in the forest if no one is there to see it?

No... it just lies there. But someone is bound to assume it had fallen, when they do see it image
