Commemorative Halves: Do I suck?

This is a continuation of this thread: OLD THREAD

I bought a lot of 6 commemorative halves on ebay for what I think was a terrific price and promised to post photos when they arrived. Well for what this seller lacks in photo and marketing skills, he makes up for in shipping speed.

All appear to be UNCs and original.

  • Wow those are nicer than I thought they were going to be, great pics too.

Unfortunately, I am not allowed to play with the You Suck gun, so you will have to wait on more responses.

Wow, pretty nice coins with nice toning. Will you submit them for grading?

  • I am thinking of submitting them. I just had a really bad experience last time with unfairly bagged coins that I am still smarting from. But, I sure would love to see a True-View of the bay bridge!

I wonder if this fella would get a star at NGC?

I see vertical hairlines on 2 of the example which makes me think these all toned in an album with plastic slides.

Never the less they are all UNC and based on the images I'll take a 2 point stab at what I think NGC may go image

    Gettysburg MS64-65
    Bay Bridge MS65-66
    South Carolina MS64-65
    Long Island MS63-64
    Cleveland MS64-65
    York MS66-67

Sounds good. Raw coins are not always a bad gamble on ebay. Especially when there is a money back guarantee.

Thanks, No one should ever use a scanner to get a coin photo. Better off buying a cheap camera. This amount of money he would have made by using my pics instead of the one below would have bought him a pretty good digitial camera.

Assuming the luster is better than the images indicate, it appears you did very well.

From the image, it appears the Gettysburg MAY have some hairlines that toned over, but it may be die polish lines or image artifacts. If you have not done so already, check the coins under a halogen lamp (and rotate them under the lamp) to see if there are any significant hairlines on any of the coins -- hopefully there are none or only a few.

Those are die striations on the Gettysburg; we've had a couple with similar marks. Nice piece and the best eye appeal of the bunch IMO.

I think that is beyond you suck more like You ba$tard!!!
  • Thanks for all the nice comments, "DOH" told me I OVERPAID for them even after seeing the photos. I would love to buy coins as cheap as he must be able to! I think anytime you can double your money you are doing pretty good. The problem is; I am going to have a hard time parting with the Gettysburg and the Bay Bridge now. image Thats why its hard to make money, I buy stuff to resell then change my mind and want to keep them!

So should I risk sending these to our host? Should I go with NGC? What would you do? image

Oh and on the photo contest, I am watching my mailbox for that coin to arrive!

You can't "suck" yourself and you can't solicit sucks.

Just present what you got and let the forum take its course.

Of course ALL of you know that you should NEVER buy raw coins on eBay, it is way too dangerous -- this was a rare exception of success. image

PCGS. Both NGC and PCGS grade commems about the same, but PCGS coins go for modestly more money due to the Kool-Aid factor. Also, in general, I use PCGS because like the PCGS holders better, especially now that NGC uses the horrid "prong" holders.

    Sweet coins. image

However, in order to get consideration for a you suck award we've got to know what you spent on the coins. After all, there are levels of you suckness. After all, if you buy a $500 coin for $5, that definitely is suckdom worthy. OTOH, buying a $500 coin for $500 is not, and buying a $500 coin for $1,000 definitely isn't suckworthy, no matter how nice the coin looks.

I gotcha. I am now very familiar with the suck criteria and realize that I dont suck as much as I had hoped. I will try harder to suck more in the future!

  • It is impossible to know. But, I wonder what they would have sold for if he had used this photo, instead of the one below it.

If he used your photos, they probably would have sold for between Greysheet 64 and 65 money. Obviously, if you do better than that in getting them certified, you will get more when you sell them.

I'm just going by the information I was given. You paid $886 for these coins correct? I checked Heritage's archives and found examples of each coin in NGC MS64 that sold in 2009. The total I came up with is $1116. By the time you pay grading fees, shipping and auction fees (if you go that route of course), you're going to lose money on this deal. Of course, my numbers assume these coins grade as NGC MS64. You've admitted a poor track record with the TPGs, so maybe some will come back BB'd which makes this an even worse deal. However, maybe one or two will come back higher and you will actually turn a profit. Double your money: no, but a modest profit is still nice of course. Your big ticket item is obviously the Gettysburg, keep your fingers crossed that it grades image

    Your fast approaching "Suckdom"

Once the grades are assigned, a numerical dollar amount can be assessed and the coveted "You Suck™" award may be presented. You may still have to appeal the proposed self awarding of a "You Suck™" and go before the "You Suck™" committee for verification.

    Hang in there.
