Truly rare prewar cards would be my bet. I would start not with the big time cards you see every day but cards like the M116 Honus Wagner or really any E card Wagner as I believe all are tremendously under priced.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
I'm not the only person that thinks low grade pre war such as the tobacco and Goudey cards with SWEET EYE *Keyword* appeal are worth every dime and will continue to be sought after by the mass majority of collectors who do not see the value in a high grade/high price tag?
This seems to be the focus of my collecting attention lately and a real challenge to scoop up based on eye appeal and attractive price range.
It's all about Value folks...and for the majority of our collectors it's not about obtaining the PSA 8's and 9's.
Early vintage cards in a very high grade, all sports. These cards are poised for growth and are not just recession-resistant, but perhaps recession-proof. Think of the a T206 Mathewson PSA 8, T206 Wagner (any grade), T205 Cobb PSA 7+, 1952 Topps Mantle (nearly any grade), 1954 Topps Aaron PSA 8+, and early vintage football cards in very high grade of transcendent or game-changing players including Clarke Hinkle, Bronko Nagurski, Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, Otto Graham, and Johnny Unitas.
There will be times when surprise trends flare up, for example the booming and fantastic prices realized on 1957 Topps Basketball and 1961 Fleer Basketball in recent years. This includes the seemingly sudden realization that was not nearly as widespread just a few years ago: apparently that a well-rounded vintage sports collection must have the 1957 Topps Bill Russell RC.
Any scarce card where the supply is less than the demand, which currently means anything pre-WW2 and high grade Mantle cards. I suspect Jordan rookies will still be strong since he was such an icon to so many who grew up in the 1980s and 90s. The modern landscape is so crowded it may be too confusing to expect growth. The entry point on a Pujols 01 Chrome RC is so much higher than most other rookie cards used to be it keeps many on the sidelines who might otherwise be buying.

Best Vince Coleman quote, assuming it is legit:
“I don’t know nothin’ about him. Why are you asking me about Jackie Robinson?”
NYT says he said it
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
