hmm, what am I missing on this grade?

Just got some cards back from PSA, and am a little stumped why this Ryan got a 7. Only thing I can see are some print defects. Centering and corners are great. Any ideas?

Otherwise perfect at first glance, a card that receives a 7 has a fold or bend toward one of the corners. Not exactly on the corner but on the edge leading to the corner. Flip the card over and look on the back. Adjust it in the lighting so you can see different angles.

    Registration + vertical print lines
Still, it looks 8-8.5 to me
  • yes, would have to check out the back

This probably won't help much, but here is the back

On the front, I did notice an ever so slight indentation, possibly the cause of the 7

Well, it would matter to me.
    it's a $750 card in psa 9
    So i imagine there's quite a bit of $ difference between 7 and 8
For me it would be worth a re-sub

Times like this you wish PSA would specify reason behind a grade

registration is off slightly, and vertical print lines

    Definitely registration.

EditL Card appears blurry at first glance and that's probably why it was graded NM.

I was always under the assumption that a fold / bend / indentation was an automatic 6 ?

  • I would resub that card if it was mine. It's really a can't lose situation. That card won't come back andy worse, and frankly, I think it comes back in a better holder if you resub it.

P.S. How does that Musial 58 A.S. look?

That print issue on the name "Astros' is print registration. It also can be seen on the right border (The long yellow line)

and on the left one (Black line) Also a line can be seen that runs right through his leg.

I guess the could have given this card a 9 OF grade. They rarely use that qualifier though.

Yes, as mentioned registration, but that's a beautiful card, tough not getting a 8. It looks like there may be some vertical print lines as well, the most evident coming out above the astros logo, overall I think the surface took the entire hit on this card. Personally I would rather have this card than one with poor centering and bad corners!

You're half right. While a fold/bend is basically the same word in regards to card condition, an indentation is not.

    A fold/bend usually results in a 7.

A surface indentation usually results in a 6
