Hate to see this thread go by the wayside... Here's a couple newp's I got this week, already graded PCGS to fill in a couple holes in my ever growing collection of Empire Germany 1 Marks:
Nothing super rare but these are pretty decent grades for these dates and the Hamburg one is a top pop. Let's see some more German!! Jim
65 posts in this thread to 516 in the British Coin Friday thread?!?!?! C'mon.. there are a million more german types than british, who has 'em??
Edit - crap! all this did was cause Roman to resurrect the Latin Coin Thursday thread, which has 115 posts!! We're lagging here! Don't make me start barking in German!
I know these are crude, nothing compared to the pretty, shiny, big chunks of silver prized at the auction houses, but these are history.
For the military buffs, Clausewitz first saw battle at the age of thirteen here. Goethe watched the bombardment of the headquarters. Lightsiders pay hundreds for coins with low mintages. These were struck from melted cannons and bells under emergency conditions just to keep things moving for the few months the French occupied Mainz during the early Revolution.
So, what's a low mintage? There are no solid figures on these types, but at the height of battle there were 23,000 troops at Mainz. Even considering the local population behind the ramparts, that's gotta be a tiny mintage.
Plus, you get a German coin, struck by the French, and it's Revolutionary. Not too bad
These are actually pretty good for the type. You can expect $30-80 for one like these. One in better condition can quickly shoot upward.. or not, depending on who's looking and whether they care.
