    Ummm...refund should be instant IMO.

The money for the sale was taken immediately wasn't it?

there is a coin dealer in CA that once told me, by law he has three weeks to do a refund, and he went so far as to say, he was going to wait till the last day to do it. if i had known about this site back then, he would have had 21 days worth of free advertising,

2+ weeks and counting.... paid by check. seller should be trustworthy but there's something disconcerting about not having the coin.. and having no money in hand... and.. waiting for someone to grace you with a refund.

If it's a B&M, but you are doing it by mail, then I think I would expect to have the refund in hand within 7 days from the time they got the coin back.
Is there a reason that you haven't mentioned them by name? Board member as well? Did from mail order?

yep. board member, I saw an ebay auction and asked them if they'd accept a price, and they were agreeable, including me splitting the payments into 2. did 50% immediately and remaining 50% 2 weeks later. Waited 1.5 weeks (after the check cleared) for delivery after "address confusion" (1.5 weeks after I clarified the address via PM - actual ship time was 1 day due to close proximity of our locations). Returned the coin via priority mail which was received @ the physical location 2+ weeks ago. As you can tell, Im just frustrated. I dont know if Im being unreasonable.

edited to add: Im just paranoid to the point Im afraid Im going to NOT get the refund after posting this thing, but Im just looking for an outlet, I dont know if Im being neurotic about the timetable Ive described.

Here is the way I look at it:

If a dealer expects payment within x days for an item you purchase, then they should provide a refund within x days once the coin is returned.

"free advertising" always helps speed up issues such as this. what i mean by free advertising is: name the dealer. most any legitimate business would rather cut the refund check as opposed to bad press. years ago my mom was in an accident, she had to get one whole side of her truck repainted, the paint didnt match, and i dont mean it was just a little off, it was WAY off. she tried to no avail to get them to fix the problem, they just kept stalling, so i called a friend of mine that does vinyl lettering, all down the one side of the truck was: This truck was painted at XXX ford dealer, and i took the thing in there, parked it right in front of the showroom window. and waltzed in, it took all of about 10 seconds for the body shop manager to set up an appointment to re-paint the truck

So can you at least post a hint as to the location of this dealer, especially if this transaction goes completely sour? Is it Allentown? Philadelphia? Kutztown? Why not just pick up the phone and call the seller ?

Paypal is very easy to refund. Writing and mailing a check shouldn't be much harder but if they are stretched to the limit then any abnormal activity might be tougher. But not that hard. I find it hard to get things done that require me to do something abnormal. If I misplace someone's address and don't want to send them an embarassing note then that may take me a while. Have you dropped them a friendly note? If I get a freindly note that helps me say, "I'm embarassed to say that I lost your address." --Jerry

As the OP mentioned, the seller is a forum member. I expect that aside from the advice I have offered him to expedite a resolution, the forum member will become aware of this thread soon enough. And if that awareness doesn't prompt a resolution either, then I am sure that the dealer, who is a member of C.C.E., will have to deal with the issue on another level. Let's not start a witch hunt here.

    ********* UPDATE

Tomorrow will make 4 solid weeks since the coin was confirmed returned to the dealers B&M.
I called the party in question directly, Aug 31st and was told the check would be in the mail that day. I received another PM that Thursday saying the check was in the mail that day...Im 1 state over, check still not received. Obviously, not cool to blame the dealer for the post office being late, but I'm very curious about the postmark on the piece of mail, if I ever actually get it.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent. I can't believe Im actually dealing with a DEALER.

So you talk the guy into a 50/50 layaway, use him as a free approval service, return the coin, and now complain that he's not refunding you immediately? Seems to me that it's about a wash--you tied each other's money/inventory up for about the same amount of time.

How much should a dealer charge for a coin sent on approval?

Not the point being made...but since you brought it up... places like Littleton charge extra for their approval stuff...but again, not the point I was making. Also, a lot of dealers have a no-return codocil on layaway items. Look in CW or NN for examples.

So there should not be a return policy for items bought on lay-away? Or maybe the dealer should have returned half his money right away and the other half a month later?

I'm sorry, I'm just trying to understand how the fact that the seller paid for the coin in two installments is at all relevant to how long the dealer took to refund the purchase price.

The few times that I have returned coins that didn't, for whatever reason, meet my standards, the refunds were prompt and accurate.

I would give this seller a very low grade. Difference is, I would out him, too.

Frankly if it were me I'd refund next day on the return just to get it over with...but my point was that it was about a wash on time wasted for both sides. Maybe the seller did it on purpose to make a statement of some sort. You'd have to ask him. And as stated earlier, many guys don't accept returns on layaways because they are making an accomodation by allowing the buyer to pay over time, while waiting to get paid and tying up inventory for X amount of time.

Not trying to be particularly argumentative about this, but you're wrong here. The seller was only out half the value of the coin during the time between the first installment and the return; the buyer also had half the value tied up for that time period, and then the full amount of the sale for four more weeks while sweating out his refund.

HOW was this sent on APPROVAL. I sent him 150 without the coin being seen. I sent him my other 150 for a total of 300, the agreed upon price. He waits 1.5 Weeks to SHIP the coin to me, I didn't like the look so I took him up on the websites 7 day return policy. I return the coin that day.. it arrives at his office a day later... I then have to wait 4 WEEKS for the return check?

the inventory wasn't in the dealers hands for about 3 days total. I paid 1/2 immediately, and completed payment 2 weeks later, ahead of schedule (1 mo)

I'd expect any business to close the deal within a 30 day window. It appears the dealer was squared up within that time frame.
PCGS has had a few of my customer's coins for nearly 3 weeks and I just tell them(customers) to keep their pants on when they call me and ask if their coins are back, yet.

I hope it doesn't hurt their feelings.

I never said the guy SENT it to you on approval; I said you basically used him as an approval service. You saw the coin on ebay, got him to do a layaway, then returned it after tying up his product... in short, you essentially gave him a 100% deposit to view it on approval, tying up inventory and wasting time after special accomodation had been made for you. It can be argued that he wasted your time as well in slowboating your refund...thus I said that imo it was a wash in that regard. Whatever. It's your deal and he agreed to it so I really don't have a dog in the hunt except to say that if I were to start offering layaways again, the item would be nonreturnable- to shake out the tire kickers.

That's rational, there are many things including a person overlooking a refund that cause a delay in mailing a refund check.
I myself would of called them after a week or 2 and checked but there was no great crime here not at all. To have any one work with you on a lay a way then allow a return as well that is more then reasonable. He took a long time to send your refund, yes. Maybe its time to give a dealer a break and the benefit of the doubt I would of in this case. He overlooked it and it was slow in getting to you . I have overlooked such things myself though I am not a coin dealer. I have found most coin dealers are human like me, its not easy to be 100% efficient on every task trust me I know.
