for the record, i believe it is an artifact of the lighting that an "S" appears to be there but in fact, my belief, is that the coin is a Philadelphia product

......but, i will say that i saved these pics from an ebay auction (already closed, 0 bids)........i must stress that i'm not the seller, nor do i know the seller, and while i thought about making contact with the seller, i resisted the urge......as i said, examining the pics closer i feel it's a Philly

i feel LoveMyLiberty is having some tongue in cheek fun with me referencing the Hallie Daggett story........it's so unlikely that it is an S that i posted a link to the auction on a public forum.......if i had any thoughts it was in fact an 1894-S then i would take a flyer on it myself

**but you have to admit that from a list of U.S. uber-rarities, this particular coin (the 1894-S) is the most likely to be cherried........all 1913 Liberty Nickels are accounted for; you'd likely never find an owner of an 1804 Dollar that didnt know what they had; no new 1838-O half dollars being found; 1876-CC 20 cent pieces dont turn up very often....etc etc

in fact, it has been told here many times that a Gimbels Department store purchased one of the known 1894-S examples over the counter (ca. 1950's) in a bulk lot!

I sometimes wonder if people with a lot of extra cash send in dozens of coins like the one above just to find out the MM's ( And to give PCGS a hard time

). Talk about having some strained eyes when clocking out for the day...

that doesnt describe me right now.......that's part of the reason i posted it here in case someone wants to take the ball and run with it.......there would also be the added expense/hassle in having it submitted and to be frank, i'm just tired of gambling in this manner

but i am still curious of course

A great space filler. How many 94-Ps have you seen that look like that? Maybe Hallie spent her pocketpiece a few years after the first one. She probably still liked ice cream.

Not an O mint mark, I have the micro O and it's way bigger than that.

I think any MM would be obvious even on a coin that worn.

The only acid that'll help you see an "S" wont be the kind you drop on the coin.
