    cleaned and dinged up, but really, not that bad.

    Love the detail and bold dentils, just wish the surfaces had more dark gray.

    The surface problems may or may not preclude slabbing. Details seems 35 or so to me.

    These coins always astound me, considering that back then, there wasn't even a dollar worth of stuff to buy.

    The interior fields show signs of cleaning or light polishing but the coin has a lot of XF+ meat (ie hair and feathers) on it, signs of luster, and starting to retone. Actually more attractive than unattractive. A little time in the smoke house and it could be a nice example. Imo this was an AU coin before the "cleaner" was called in to do their handiwork.

    Overall a worthy net VFish or even XFish coin. Whatever feather and hair details are flat, seem totally due to strike rather than wear. Probably won't grade though. No doubt you got it cheap enough to make it a good value.

    It seems to be fairly decent despite the cleaning with a lot of detail remaining.

    Very tough type coin... Cleaned, definitely, but I've seen alot worse... I like it at VF... L

    Looks much better than what I was expecting to see when I read the title of the thread. Appears to be cleaned, but certainly not awful to look at. There are many, many worse examples out there.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Honestly, i wasted my time looking at this non-mint state coin.

    Just kidding, i like her as a VF/XF, nice coin overall!

    Strange color and surfaces. I hope it looks better in hand, but would not have purchased it from the photo.

    To find a coin in it's 214th year, most got cleaned somewhere along the way. Nice addition.

    The poor thing does look as screwed up as a polished Morgan Dollar, but I think it deserves some love anyway.

    I like it...probably close to 100% of these would be as black as a lump of coal if not
    cleaned. (Look at the loop of the 9 in the date..)

    It's a nice coin Al. An O-119, R.4 with the die lump in VF-35+ (even before I looked at the
    properties)image My guess is the coin is a bit darker in hand and already slabbed? Hard to
    find a nice one with few marks & no early cleaning. Enjoy it.

    You could always crack it out and carry it around a bit as a pocket piece... image

    I have absolutely no problem with that coin looking like that. I actually like it especially for a 214 year old coin.

    If PCGS says VF35, that's good enough for me --- and good enough for most collectors. I wish I could afford one like yours. Enjoy owning it!

    Excuse me for asking, but is it a half or a dollar?
    Based on absolutely nothing, I'll go with VF, who knows maybe XF on a good day.
    Nice coin, still plenty of detail, and appealing, IMHO.

    Honestly? Okay...without respect to Overton variety it looks dipped and far too white for the date and grade. The light hits all over the fields pop out from the stripped surfaces. Overall, the eye appeal is nasty in my opinion and not what I would suggest for someone to spend those type of funds to obtain. Recently, there was posted a much more apparently original and attractive 1795 FH half from the CRO website, have you seen that coin?

    I would greatly prefer to have a lower grade coin that is perfectly original for the same price. That is my opinion.

    they missed a plugged hole on a certain famous 1836 r.e., & it was tooled on both sides

    do you think pcgs can not make mistakes??? that is why there is a (partial) guarantee.

    I think we are being very hard on the sellers images. Don't they normally make most coins look a lot lighter than they end up being.
