did any problems with spotting or any other problems exist in 1909 with the lincoln cents?

.......i keep reading how the mint will delay mint sets due to the tarnish problems of the 95% copper cents. i just wonder if the mint had a similar problem way back in 1909?... image

I have to beleive that there was something different in the preparation of the planchet that is different causing the spotting now and probably not then. I just don't know exactly how they did it in 1909. The mint website has a virtual tour of the current process and you see them using a chemical wash of some kind that I think must have been different then.

I don't think they cared in 1909, the bruhaha was over the designer initials.

Not exactly what I meant, I was implying that they did not care if the coins were tarnished.

    That was your question? Right?

I'm sure it also helped that they only had to make a few million coins verses the 3-4 BILLION they do today...

recently got some red white and blue wrapped denver mint washington $1's with spots on most of the coins in the rolls. there were over 10 over polished die coins in the 5 rolls I got but all had spots on both sides.

I once said spotting on the new $1's was rare. It was. I almost never saw it. Now I'm seeing it more, even in the mint sets.

Looking at my Dansco album the cents from mint sets are getting a nice target toning where the proofs are getting ugly splotchy spots.

Ive had quite a few very high grade MS 1909 Lincolns....and I would say they are perfect, in regards to absence of any spotting or toning (from the period). Perhaps someone finally took a look at the 2009's and said "Hey guys, I see some funny little spots on these...anyone ever notice that before?"
