He's been in jail - out - and deserves to work.
But, there's an image factor to sports that can't easily be denied or hidden.
America loves their pets - of which the dog is on top of the heap - I would guess - so he has a totally uphill battle with respect to the PR element.
I can see some 800 lb lineman slam dunk Vick and say: "that's fer ma dawg!"
Last - and unfortunately - IMO - Vick doesn't come off as the most affable guy in front of the camera - and doesn't look very contrite. So, he's gonna get booed like crazy this season. And, what he did was immensely sadistic and insane - and can't easily be pardoned by the public by just coming out and saying one is sorry.

Anybody who doubts that should visit their local courthouse.
Find the calendar and sit in on some criminal trials.
The galleries at trials of folks who have killed other folks are pretty calm.
At any trial on "animal cruelty," the galleries are usually raucous and always stare daggers at the defendants.

I know a bunch about how to rehab a personal/corporate image. BUT, I have NO clue about how to make folks forgive doggie/kitty murderers.
The Christian-card that his new employer is heavily playing tonight might have some good effect, but I don't think it will quickly do the trick.

Looking at the guy on TV, I admit that I kinda feel "sorry" for him.
But, then I think about the lady dogs that had all 40+ of their teeth pulled out - one at a time - because it made them less resistant to Vick's "breeding program."
Dogs' teeth are often pretty hard to get out. They have to be wrestled out. Dogfighters sometimes pour Jack Daniels down a dog's throat to "ease the pain" during such extractions.
