<< <i>Well I got my camera out, cracked open the box from Steve and was very excited to get into this 1979 vending box.
Oh well - this was the most complete bust of almost anything I have ever RIPPED. No star cards - none - I was very excited as I looked at the first 20-30 cards as the centering was really good. I was just pumped at the thought of the Ozzie under each card as I slipped through card after card, but alas nothing. The biggest name I got was Carlton Fisk. oh well................
Better luck to the rest of you - I have nothing to scan >>
I'm sorry this happened to me.
I will have to check if there are some lo pop commons that might be sub worthy.
my ozzie was horrible. it looked nice, except that theres a big double-wide indentation going through the 1/3 horizontal and the 2/3 horizontal point. sorry i don't have any scans righ tnow.

Condition: Off-centered mostly (usually 75/25 to 90/10), but otherwise good condition. Star Power: Decent. Pulled most of the high-valued players except for Rose.
<< <i>Cards have arrived in Seattle! Will post pictures later this evening. Box has a ding on one of the edges that has affected 30+ cards. I hope they are all off-center commons. >>

Sadly, that's the problem with 79 right now. Even though some commons are very tough, there's no competition for them so even the toughest ones barely sell for the grading fee. There's only about 4 cards you can hit in PSA 9 to make a vending rip worth the $

I am a PSA newbie, what cards are the ones at PSA 9 worth the rip. Do all 10s in this set even commons sell high? I wasn't part of this group rip but I went ahead and ordered a 79 vending from BBCE that is arriving today so I want to make sure which cards are worth submitting at 9 or better. Thanks
Wow, congrats on the 2 Ozzies!! At first if I would have got that box and seen the damage, I would have sent it back. Good thing that box didn't come to me...I would have kicked myself if I knew I passed up two Ozzies!!
Is anyone on this board tight with Joe Orlando? If so, it might not hurt to put a bug in his ear that they are about to receive a ton of 1979 Ozzies and 1979s in general. He should also know that they are from a freshly cracked vending case from BBCE. That might go a long way to alleviate the evidence of trimming grades I'm guessing some will receive.
<< <i>Thanx for sharing IK - to be honest they should have never sent you a box with that kind of damage.
But - hey - ya got 2 Ozzies!
Congratulations. mike >>
At first I wasn't too happy with the ding, but I've always received good products and service from Steve so I said what the heck and just busted in open on faith. Like I said, 25 cards damaged, biggest star was Piniella, so it all worked out.

are you suggesting favoritsm? No matter whether it's from the BBCE or John Doe down the street, PSA should grade cards equally and fairly.
I don't know why Stargell (outlined in red) is so much harder to find centered as it isn't a corner card on the uncut sheet, maybe Topps used a different size photo for his card than on all the other cards?

Interesting. I looked at my Fidrych which is just a few away from Stargell and its OC T/B. Currious if the whole line of cards are printed closer to the row on top of them. Could definitely be an issue with the original printing layout.
Didn't someone post a 1952 uncut sheet that showed how the cards do not line up with each other.
Its not always a problem with cutting, but also with how the originals were created.

I guess I'm not seeing it as favoritism. I'm just wanting them to have a heads up that there will be some nice Ozzies and other 1979s on their way. My feeling is that if they feel a card is too good, they error on the side of EOT versus grading it. Nothing to back that up, just a feeling. So if they know there are a bunch of nice Ozzies coming and they are aware that most are from a rip from a newly opened vending case, they may be more apt to grade those versus giving the dreaded EOT. If you feel that's favoritism, I guess that's how you feel.

9s that bring highest $: Ozzie Rose Winfield Stargell Molitor
My box arrived on Thursday. As expected, there were a lot of corner dings and o/c cards. But a lot of them were in great shape and centered very decently. I ordered a second vending box along with this one, and if the results are similar, I would likely get a third one so as I can complete a minty raw set for my collection.
I had given up hope of getting an Ozzie as I was down to my last stack of twenty five or so cards, and guess who pops up?
This group rip was my first but certainly not my last. Thanks again to Don for putting this together and I look forward to the next one.
I got baseball card box that has around 600 or so 1979 topps cards that I haven't pawed through in over 25 years. I think I'll take a look this weekend.

PSA 10 fahgetaboutit!!!
Not sure about the others?
Fresh box from BBCE
Oh no! A big DING!
Opened box
Close up of dinged cards...looks like about 30 cards
Will look at dinged cards first and hope they are all commons...which they pretty much were
Next stack
A few nice cards
Next stack...getting better
Next stack...looking good
BINGO!
PSA 7/8
Next stack...doubles looking good...BINGO...Ozzy #2
Last cards
All together a very nice rip...got some good stars, well centered commons for my raw set
Overall, not too many duplicates, not too many damaged cards, good stars, I'm very pleased.

Edit- yah, my 200th post!!

Very nicely centered.

11 confirmed sightings so far. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks in advance.

Not especially, maybe $10 - $15 in high grade PSA.
