Springfield, IL, Do cheaters prosper?

Just wanted to give a little information about the cent release held today in Springfield, IL. It was pretty well attended, with Mr. Moy once more on the podium presenting the new professional life cent. the line started overnight, but i joined it around 7 AM. The exchange started around 11 AM, and the line snaked through the interior of the old statehouse grounds, and then out and around the block. It started quickly, and everyone was limited to 6 rolls per pass in the line, with everyone welcome to rejoin the line at its end.
Mostly, there was order, with a few occurances--one person was almost tossed out and arrested for profanity (a dad complained as his children had to listen to the guy until the cop showed up). The other occurances had to do with people in the employ of a rather well known retail coin business located in Georgia but with a name that sounds like they are actually Tennesse based. It seems that this company charters a bus to attend the cent releases, and then those temporary employees stand in line and buy coins for them. Problems began to show when the temps (children included) started cutting into lines, and then when they were told to go to 1 of 6 stations to buy their 6 rolls, they would visit as many stations as possible, sometimes buying as many as 18 rolls at a pass.
The police were involved finally to kick out the line cutters, while the multi-roll buyers were asked to stop. The temps explained earlier that the coin company paid them $150 to work for them, a free lunch, and a bonus to the top 6 people with the best roll results. Some temps explained that the multi-roll technique was mentioned as a sure fire way to win that all important $50 bonus.
I personally dont mind that the coin company hired people--that is their right--but i do mind when they promote active cheating and dishonesty. When the rolls finally ran out, there were some servicemen who had come late to the event, and there were no rolls left--but some people in line graciously gave up some of their rolls to the servicemen, and they were thanked whole heartedly by the servicemen and the event staff.
What should have been a nice experience was marred by these bragging, dishonest, lying temps. I personally saw one guy jump from 1 position to another right infront of me, and I stopped the event staff from handing over the rolls, explained that he had already obtained his rolls, and he bald-faced lied that he had not, there was a mistake, and could he have his rolls. This was after he had bragged to a group of people that he was successfully grabbing 18 rolls a trip instead of 6.
So--do cheaters really prosper? is this how you become a successful coin dealership?

Flipping is where it is at for some...no real collecting (many real collectors will flip as well, but there are some that seem to live only to flip and have thousands of posts about it....they also get quite defensive about it ).
I get the USMint doing a promo for the new cents, but, like with many things, they aren't thought out well. They pretend to do things for collectors but they do not have a finger on the pulse of the collectors.
I don't get them having to have a promo appearance for EVERY new coin design. And, the only places that get the new coins are usually the place they do their appearance and promo at and the USMint's actual store(s) which serve very few people.
They should just stop doing that for new releases unless they are available to all the same day. At least 1 place in each state (which, I don't think is that realistic, but it should be the all or nothing, imho...if they want to be fair. If they don't, they should state that).
Until the all or nothing happens, these types of cheaters will prosper and it will keep happening.

<< <i>I feel like crap now.. Although I got 60 rolls today, it was easy and everyone else did it... Sorry you guys had a horrible experience.. How much is too many?
Didn't you get yours in DC?
I got mine in Springfield (38 rolls altogether). Me, my wife, and my niece went through the line twice (and got baked by the sun in the process).
end up the losers
that they are.

Yea two different locations in DC. I could of brought 10 other of my sons Golf team buds and got 60 rolls that way one time, but I guess that's not right either.. Oh well, I was told today, Nov 12 is final chance to get exchanged for 4th and final lincoln cent..
<< <i>I can only imagine how many people must have been lined up at the local Springfield Post Office shortly thereafter to get their rolls "stamped" and "canceled" which is a stupid marketing ploy, IMHO. I see they're all over the place on eBay already.
Went past the Springfield PO and there was a line

Russ (from Texas) and Jim (from Nevada) were both there!
As for YaHa, he already stated that there were not any long lines so don't feel bad George!
I remember the State Quarter Release for Colorado! That line was worse than any of the Diney rides during peak times! And it was hot.
As for the US Mint and their promotions....................................., I really feel kinda cheated.
The name is LEE!

Yes, but I blame the Mint for the creating an environment which was conducive to cheating. Why didn't they have simultaneous nationwide release of the coins?

When I walked home from work at 5:00PM, people were still getting their rolls stamped at the Post Office. Seems like a stupid waste of perfectly good postage stamps to me.
It just looks like the older generation has some and the newer breed have greed.

The first Hodgenville stamped rolls were $150.
Hoard the keys.

How "old" for "older"? I'm in my 40s and I see people older than me that show the mega-greed on these forums....
There are also some younger than me that show values....so, it isn't just an age thing. It's a mind thing

<< <i>These guys will have trouble making a profit. The stamped rolls are only going for $11-15, with the most desirable cancellation (Springfield).

Good...I would laugh if they dropped like a rock asap (probably won't happen, but it would be funny)

Oh, yes, that Bernie Madoff kid is a stellar example of what's wrong with the youngsters these days.
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
Maybe the people getting them stamped will have a premium, but the cheaters wouldn't.
<< <i>A) The mint should send an unlimited supply to the drop-offs.

Edit to add: there sure must be a lot of people with extra time on their hands to be able to go from state to state chasing these things like Grateful Dead groupies.

The U.S. Mint is the real crooks and everyone from the bottom to the top.. Charging you $8.95 plus shipping for Two Golden Ticket wrappers.. And frankly that's all I will say about that.
I hope who ever pays the $12.00 to get $1.00 worth of worthless firehouse dogs pennies, AkA(Black Spots) all over their coins, don't bushwack some "ME/Collectors" that made a effort to drive 15 miles, stand in line and then play the system if needed be..
Some people are really crazy to say what you do.. Others people are not wrong if the rules are not enforced.. Come on man!!
<< <i>Where are all the places for the 4th rollout of Lincolns? >>
good question.
considering the last version is the US Capitol, I'd guess Washington, DC.
However, they already release in Washington, DC. So they open a 3rd place, the Capitol, and the street people get inline multiple times again except this time it is at a 3rd location.
202-756-6160 Mint Director Moy's Fax line.
Fax in and ask that the 4th release include all previous locations. Maximum exposure.
<< <i>Why didn't they have simultaneous nationwide release of the coins? >>
the mint has a very, very limited number of facilities. Philly, Denver, San Fran, West Point, Fort Knox, DC... that's about it. They could partner with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and cover Fort Worth (additional locations?). Still. they'd be spending big bucks to have a release location in every state. The mint is a profitable institution, but this is a dollar = $1.00 exchange they make nothing on.

as a not so newer generation, I have also had that feeling. I am thankful and greatful to the people that provide the impetus to change for the better.

I've also wondered about this.... where are the chinese counterfeits for forever stamps?
forever stamps stolen and sold on ebay
I did ee the long lines at the post offices! The funniest thing is that all of the locals caould not believe all of the crowd to get some pennies. As a side note...
When Moy got up there to speak we all wanted to see how many times he would say PENNY versus CENT. He held strong for about 30 seconds and he started saying Penny constantly. It seems like and uphill battle on that one. Look at the NF String and son wrappers... "Pennies".
Great event. Russ and I along with 4 others that got aqainted as we were in line for hours....just wanted to call the cheats on it knowing full well that it was only a temporary fix.
The differnce in Springfield was there were quite a few post offices. The crowded one was the one closet to the event. One mile away it was like a normal day at the post office.
Even calmer 30 miles away in Lincoln, IL. We made the journey out there as well.
It was not a boring day at all!
At least the penny market is going. The rest of the coin market seems rather slow.
Maybe I will run into more of you at the next release.....

While some might think there are better things to do than travel to see a release--i have to say that going to Lincoln City was a blast, driving through the countryside and seeing the history of the region--and then Springfield--to walk in the footsteps of Lincoln, see the sights he saw, see the rooms in the old Statehouse, and know the greatest president we have ever had sat there and worked--it was well worth the trip. I may never have had the inclination to go on my own, but to mix a littl;e business with pleasure was great.
The practice of getting rolls stamped is an odd one--initially, I participated because of the intent to get 1st Day PCGS slabs, but then they only allowed sealed cases, and now, its just a practice that doesnt have much other than the ability to put together a roll set of released coins. The speaical commemorative stamps from the Post Office are actually allowed to be used for 30 days--its a fixed date stamp, and they will stamp anything you send to them, and they will mail it right back to you within that timeframe. many folks will buy those only to find out later they truly are as one person here is known to quote" as common as dirt". The rolls with true postal specific date stamps are the rare ones, because most people did not get those types of stamps--just the commemorative stamp. Rare being subjective--since the coins themselves are not rare, just the experience of obtaining rolls on the lawn of the statehouse.
(and I think those guys were legally hired, although i dont know how you hire 4, 5 ,6 year olds legally these days, its just when you hire someone, and then tell them how to cheat--Im not sure of legality, im just talking ethics) Does being smart make any difference?

This must explain why people flip me off for going the speed limit in most major cities
