Ripped a box of 88 Fleer basketball today - scans!

highly motivated by the BBCE group rip, and my desire to put together a psa 10 set since its loaded and relatively cheap. Paid $390 for the box, and will be abusing the $4.50 special now. No dinged packs, and some real good stuff pulled (scanned the best here). Ended up with 5 regular Jordans (none worth grading), 4 Jordan AS that were all beautiful, 4 millers (3 with easy shot at 9's and possible 10's), 4 Pippens that I have no idea how they will grade - 2 could have a chance at 10's given the centering, 3 Stocksons (1 gradeable) and 3 Stockon AS (all gradeable and sharp), and 3 nice Birds (not pictured). Sadly no gradeable Rodman, but overall I could put together some great raw sets from these. Really not one dinged corner in all 36 packs! Stickers weren't that great - 3 Jordan's and all off center. Wish me luck on the grading - no idea how this will come out, but I will have a good 50-60 going in with hopes of 10's.

Jordan AS's - all should be easy 9's

5 regular Jordan's, but none would be higher than an 8 due to centering image
image

Millers - all georgeous, and really hoping for one if not two 10's.
image

Stockton's - maybe a 10 in one of the AS?
image

Pippens - hoping for one 10

    Hey - very nice box!

The Jordans don't look that bad to me.

    Good luck on your sub!

Jordan's aren't bad except for centering - I guess at $4.50 it's probably worth subbing them. I have no idea how the dusting in the Pippens will affect the grade - two are top notch without that.

  • Very well done! I definetly see some 10's in there...

I don't think you'll get a 10 on any of those pippens to many print dots in the black area...

I've had a full set of 1988 fleer in PSA 10 and about 90 or so BGS 9.5's some of the cards are pretty tough.

on the first group sub LSU did I got a PSA 10 clyde drexler which I sold for 750.00 that is a really tough one and most likely the last one you will need to complete a set..

Looks like a pretty nice box you got there though good luck on the grades.

Nice box, thanks for the scans!

I agree with Stone. The bottom row of 3 regular Jordans have centering that falls well within 9 range. They all look better than 60/40 l-r and 40/60 or better t-b. Definitely worth subbing at $4.50. Good luck

Very nice box and great looking cards. Good luck with the grades.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

  • Wow! image Too sweet! Sure brings back memories. I used to see these in card shops when I was a kid. Jordan's cards were already commanding high prices then.

    Sweet! Love that set.

Thanks for the input on the Jordan's - I guess I am always a little more harsh since I am not used to getting the grades I expect from PSA. I had no idea why the Drexler's had a low PSA 10 pop until I noticed each one I pulled looks like it had a tire track on it. Same with Pippens and the snow.

  • Super cool rip. I just bought a box from BBCE a few months ago for nostalgic reasons. The problem with these boxes is that most of the value is in the unopened product itself. You can buy pack fresh complete sets for around $70 all day long. You'll get around 3 sets per box. Thats $210 or about $400 for a box. Im keeping mine intact forever.

I think, given the small set size and dupes you get, you can easily make money cracking these open. Grading all potential 10's and the stars, combined with selling extra sets like you mentioned...you may not make a ton, but likely more than you would holding on to it. Plus what fun is that?!!! I probably wouldn't have purchased had I not wanted to put together a graded set - thought this might be a good way to do it on the cheap(er).

I have about 10 raw Jordans, and a few Stocktons. I also have the set mounted in a poster frame on the wall of my home office. My point is sure its fun to rip....but even after ripping/subbing, you are just gonna "look" at them anyway right? Same way as I look at that beautiful unmolested box. The sealed box is a collectible in itself.

You can get lucky and get a bunch of 10's from a box but it's not the norm... alot of the commons can be had online for 10.00 or less as the pop reports have grown for many...

Edit to add: some of the cards you posted shouldn't be 10's IMO like the miller rc's all 3 have a big print dot on his arm which would put them at 9's imo..

Ripping boxes is fun but it's simply gambling. If a card dealer would always come out ahead they would rip the boxes themselves. However, it is a lot of fun to gamble... that's why Vegas has HUGE hotels. People enjoy playing games of chances. I have ripped (usually without great success) many boxes of cards in my day!

Yes its gambling of sorts, but to me a lot more fun. I'm simply hoping to offset some costs of putting this set together in graded form, and sometimes the cheaper way to to this is ripping and submitting (especially with so few cards in the set). I don't want to pay $90 for a Jack Sikma card, and I got a nice one in the break - real good shot at a 10 (as an example). And if I don't come out even, so be it. I certainly wouldn't buy and rip a bunch of boxes to do this. Maybe one more depending on how these come back, but it is doubtful. I couldn't collect boxes and not rip them myself.

Jack Sikma 90.00?? one ended today with no bids.. right now there's dozens of cards from this set in PSA 10 ending in less than 2 hours with no bids (opening price 15.00) I understand "the fun" of ripping and subbing your own stuff but it's not gonna be easy as you think..

  • burke23burke23 Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭
The $90 was for two previous Sikma sales on VCP - I just started collecting this, so no idea on the really difficult cards to get, or if the last few sale prices on a card would hold. I never thought I would get a whole set put together this way, but thought its an easier and more fun way to get the set started. If I drop $650 - $700 on the box and grading, and in the process get 1/4 of the set completed, and get even close to that on the graded value in return (hopefully do-able given what I've seen) I'll be a happy guy. I still have bids on 30 or so psa 10's out there right now- might as well buy those to just in case since the price is right. Ripping and submitting is just more rewarding to me.
