Bob, Nice looking Ozzie. If anyone hits a Willie Stargell well centered i'm willing to buy if you want to sell. Thanks Bobby

Damn straight Bobby... the Stargell MIGHT be the toughest card in that set.... most people don't know that.
I believe the last PSA 9 went for $100+ on the 'Bay. It's hard to fine 8's for less than $20.

    Stargell is indeed very tough
But most of the stars are fairly easy to find centered
Except for Ozzie, one of the toughest RCS of the decade
AND worth every penny of $300 in PSA 9 (IMO)

So good luck to everyone who is ripping!

That Ozzie is the most centered I've seen in a long time that was pack or box fresh. Good luck!
  • I was hoping my box would come today so I called the wife from work and asked if she would check the mail.
They were calling for rain in my area today and I have the Mailman from Hell. Shove it in the front till it comes out the back.
So about an hour goes by and I call her back and she says my card is here. Now I am all pumped up and can't wait to get
home. But on the way home I call the wife again to see if she needs anything from store, just trying to be suck up since I will
be busy tonight sorting cards. Well sure enough she needs a load of stuff from Walmart. But how can I say no since she did
save my cards from a down pour of rain that we did get this afternoon. After carrying Ten bags of stuff into the house she says
thanks, here's your card and hands me a small bubble mailer. My heart sank a little but I got over it when I say the 62 Reds Team
card in PSA 8. Now I have to ask her to check the mail tomarrow since they are calling for more rain. What really makes it hard
to ask her to do this is that see has severe Emphysema and COPD. She knows how much I enjoy cards and said she would do it.
    I love her so.

fyi.. not that you want to leave your cards in the rain.. however.. the box is shrink wrapped..
and well backed in thick bubble wrap.. along with peanuts.. inside a box...
hope this eases your mind some

Any nice Luis Tiant's or Yaz cards Bob?
  • ZixxZixx Posts: 228 ✭✭
Steve told me my box would be going out on Monday, which is obviously today . . . since I had to wait until they were open on Friday to pay. And I live in CA.

It's going frustrating to wait until Thursday? to get the box, and more so while seeing the pulls from those who are ripping. Then again, the anticipation is pretty awesome image

Interestingly, the worst thing that could happen to me is to actually pull a card that grades a 10 or a rare 9 and sell it for a few hundred. Pay for the initial box and then I'd spend the rest on more.

And I'm already wondering what the next group rip is gonna be

    /sigh . . .

UPS man just dropped off my Gem Mint Ozzie box. I have some customers coming in to do paperwork shortly so I'll be ripping sometime later this afternoon. In the immortal words of Lil Jon' "YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH".

what is the best way to get these out of the vending box? They are extremely tight.

Open the box, turn it upside down and while holding it hit the bottom of it really hard. That should remove them pretty quickly. image

first half of box done. Scans to come before I look through the second half.
  • corvette1340corvette1340 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭
Ozzie is a centered pretty good compare to a lot of the others I've seen. Probably an 8.

    image

Some stars, the Ryan has a corner ding and most of the stars are too off center to sub.

    image

    I may sub the Rice

    image

some of the better ones on first glance that may be sub worthy

    image

second half of box to come.
  • corvette1340corvette1340 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭
haven't got time to scan these right now due to work, but I got a Rose with a dinged corner, a 8'ish Molitor, a Catfish Hunter and Eddie Murray that are sub worthy along with several commons that are pretty sharp and sub worthy. I got at least one of every regular issue star and every card listed in SMR except the #6 Strikeout Leaders.

Overall it was a fun rip, but I couldn't dance to it.

Got this one around 1989. Gentleman brought partial sets of 79 and 78 Topps to me in paper sandwich bags and traded them for a 89 Upper Deck hand set and I think 86 Donruss The Rookies set.

    image
    image

Far from perfect but was amazed that this (along with a 78 Murray RC) survived the sandwich bag. image

Corvette - nice Ozzie. It's good to see that the ozzies have had somewhat decent centering so far. Now if I could just get my box and actually pull one.

That's too funny because I also had a really nice Ozzie RC and a Murray RC from my childhood collection. The reason they were still nice is because as a kid, I only carried around the Rose's, Garvey's, etc.

I also took these to a card store in '90 (during college) and traded them for modern garbage. I think I got about $20 in trade for each. I think I picked up an Eric Dickerson rookie.

that's crazy. I'm gonna sub the Molitor I got as it may be a 9. The Munson is probably an 8. The Nolan and Rose had corner dings. The Schmidt, Brett, Carew, Yaz, Yount, Murphy, Winfield, Carlton, and Fisk are a little too off center. I got doubles of Seaver, Bench, and Reggie. The Palmer is sub worthy but its got a gnarly fisheye right beside his head. I didn't get an Andre Dawson or a Ryan/Richard SO leader card.

Mine arrived today... looks like UPS had a LOT of fun with this box during delivery.
Thankfully Steve packs very well, and my Vending box was safe inside.

Just got back from the State Fair, so I'm a little pooped for now... I will post some scans tomorrow.

Why isnt the 79 Stargell listed in the smr price guide? I have a BVG 9.5 and would like to know what its worth?

"Why isnt the 79 Stargell listed in the smr price guide? I have a BVG 9.5 and would like to know what its worth?"

SMR isn't always the most useful guide on the planet. Just guessing, but I'd say your BVG 9.5 is worth at least $400-600... but it would be worth more (maybe twice that) in a PSA 10.
Think it would cross over? There are NO 10's and just 18 PSA 9's at the moment.

    Got a scan?

btw... even though I'm outta gas for the day, I somehow managed to get through my box.

1 Ozzie, 1 regular Ryan... no Rose, no Yaz.
2 Stargells (OC), 3 Seavers, LOTS of well centered team cards.

    Scans tomorrow.

I just tried to post a scan on here but said the file size was too big. The card has almost perfect centering. I also wanted to post a 79 topps psa 9 Parker, and a 1975 mini psa 9 Parker. If anyone has any clue why it wouldnt let me post pictures, would sure like to know?
  • Thanks for the rip. My buddy and I went in on a box. Amazed at the horrible centering and dings. One of the exceptions, thankfully, was the Ozzie...more on that later.

Got many stars, but really none were submittable. Either they were o/c bad, had a bubble, or had a dinged corner. Our two Bench cards were miscut as the left edge was straight, then a blip out, then straight again.

As for stars, we got Brett, Molitor, Ryan, 2 Benchs, 2 Morgans, 2 Reggies, Fisk, McCovey, Palmer, Yaz, Munson, Yount, 2 Seavers, Stargell, Rice, Carew and Trammell. Again, not many were submittable. Got many All-Time Record Holders but they were all o/c.

Got a pretty decent Pedro Guerrero RC. Not 10 material.

    image

Really the following three were the best centered we got.

    image

Finally the Ozzie. Thankfully this was one of the better centered cards in the box. One of the best centered I've seen. Back is centered nicely too.

seeing the scans brings back memories- I was born in '80 and my dad had a couple boxes of '79 Topps that we opened on my 5th birthday....good times
  • jayhawkejayhawke Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭
That last Ozzie looks real nice. I remember opening tons of '79 rack packs. The only problem was that I stored them in the basement and it was damp down there. I couldn't save very many of the cards. I also lost my entire '78 collection the same way.
  • daddymcdaddymc Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭
Wow, the Ozzies keep on coming. That's at least four so far.

Minnesotahusker - that Ozzie looks fantastic. Good luck on the grade if you sub it.
