Crack and cross?

I cropped the scan down where you can't see the grade and my scanner sucks on grading BGS cards. Anyway, I will tell you it is a BGS 9 w/ a 10 on corners and 9.5 on centering. I boguht this one because I thought it had a shot at a PSA 10. I paid a tad more than what a PSA 9 would have cost. If it crossed to a 9, I would keep it for my personal collection. If it happened to get a 10, I would sell it.

Do you think it is worth the trouble to crack and cross to PSA?

The first thing that jumps out at me is that the registration is off a little. My major concern in crossing BGS to PSA is that BGS slabs sheet cut cards.

The registration is the only flaw.

Definitely give it a shot under the special, then. I don't see it getting any lower than a 9.

I'm not a big BGS guy but I don't think I've ever seen a 10 subgrade on corners for something other than a finest or chrome card. Since you also have the 9.5 on centering, I'd crack and resubmit a couple of times on this one to try and get the PSA 10.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Good Luck. I cracked and crossed a BGS 9 and it came back an PSA 8. food for thought

  • My only fear is trying to crack the BGS slab. Busted my fair share of PSA, SGC and BCCG slabs but almost ended up in the ER last time I tried to bust a BGC slab.

I'm a bit surprised by the 9.5 centering grade. the side-to-side centering, while withing the GEM MINT parameters, isn't what BGS typically grades a 9.5...
  • I figured worst case scenario I turn a $50 card into a $20 card. Best case scenario I turn a $50 card into a $1000 card.

I change my opinion...leave it alone...along with what gumby said...

PSA also grades cards "trimmed" that are pulled from packs. Everytime someone posts a beckett grade card the first thing someone says is its trimmed or sheet
cut. Chances are it isn't trimmed and it isn't sheet cut. Beckett can measure cards too.

I would keep the card, or submit to BGS again. Wouldn't a BGS 9.5 be worth more than a PSA 10? Is this issue about getting the card into a PSA holder
    or making the most money?

I hate when Kevin posts something that I can't argue with.

I subbed a total of three 82 Topps Ripkens last year that were straight from packs. Two of them came back as EOT on the first sub attempt. I was so sure that at least one of the 3 was a 10, that I sold my 9 that was probably worth cracking and resubbing too. Eventually all 3 ended up in PSA 8 holders.

As far as the reasons for cracking it, I mentioned earlier that I want a 9 for my personal collection. A 10 would be sold. Yes I know I could have bought a PSA 9 for less than I paid for this one, but the crack and resub was worth the risk for an extra $15.
  • I say go for it and good luck, it looks like a PSA 10 to me!

Do you have to crack it? Can't you just send it in for a crossover? Is that taboo?
  • I personally prefer to crack and sub, especially for a BGS graded card.

Would it be worth one shot at a crossover first? For $4.50 there's a lot less chance of screwing it up cracking it, and at least you'll get one opinion on the matter...

I just feel that I will not get an unbiased opinion if it is in another TPG holder.

Plus, I like risking bodily injury destroying a $50 card. It's just the way I roll.

I have had cards crossover from SGC and BGS. Some went up, some went down, and some stayed the same. I usually leave it in the holder to send it.
