The ANA: What a disgrace! Here's what YOUR ANA does for you.

saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,728 ✭✭✭
The official designated hotel for the LA ANA sho is the Wishire Grand downtown.

It's just a mere one mile plus form the convention center! image

Now what genius process figured this out. To walk that far, with coins of value, in 85%+ heat....through an evolving but not yet good area? This stinks. There are connectiong hotels all over the center but they found one a mile away. Hummm....wonder what the real rates are?

It stink and this is why I always say "who gives a crap about the ANA". What have they done for me today?

Someone probably got a good kickback from the hotel. I bet the ANA officers are not paying to stay there.

It does not seem to be a mile. It is closer than the Hilton, and I have walked from there every day.

The only one I found that was actually close is a Holiday Inn, which I understand is full.

I stayed at the Wilshire Grand Tuesday night, and will not return. The rooms are so small that there is not room for a small dresser, the ventilation was poor, and I think I heard every toilet flush in the hotel all night. Then, the tapping and hammerring started around 6:00 am. All this for a mere $200/nite with the tax. No thanks.

The only positives is that there is a free ANA shuttle bus in the moring and evening hours. For the public transit adventerous, the 7th Street Metro Rail Station is across the street form the hotel, and I did note Transit Police and LAPD foot and Segway patrols in the station. I did not feel confortable using the Metro Rail Station at the Convention Center, as it is an open platorm two very long blocks away in a marginal area of town, and no police patrol. And, there is a Starbucks next door too.

I assume you big dogs all know this, but the "special convention rates" are typically 20% higher than standard and goes toward kickbacks and room comps for the hosting firm (in this case the ANA). You can complain, but that's how that biz works. Any hotel mentioned anywhere in official convention lit is usually playing. Check the Wilshire's regular rates for next week and you'll see what I mean. The last conference I went to in Orlando I checked at the last minute and got in the Peabody (the one with the ducks) at 50% off due to cancellations.

I am a platinum Starwood member so I try to only stay at their brands (Sheraton, Westin, etc.). I just noticed that the Westin Boneventure downtown LA appears to be only about $125/night for this weekend. I like that hotel (and know the front desk manager well). If anyone is desperate to move to a nice hotel, you should consider that Westin (and take a short cab ride to the convention center). Feel free to Pm me for some additional tips with making a reservation there. Always be careful downtown LA as you would in most major US cities. Wondercoin

It's pretty common for a convention's "official" hotel to not be the closest, because the hotels adjacent to convention centers don't need to offer discounts to attract convention attendees. It's certainly not unique to the ANA.

I usually agree with you, SG, but I think this time your ire is misguided.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Hell I'm just getting tired right now thinking about your journey ..

Also if I was to Attend tha show, I would go to the nearest grocery store, grab a basket, whip out my rain gear or blanket and park my ass in the back alley of the convention center so I could sleep and eat near the HVAC blowers..

When I need to chit/shower or shave, well the convention center has clean restrooms right.. Next time you see a dirty looking guy with a cane and a sign saying I love coins, wish I could be like you,. Just drop a gold token or a $20 bill in my Maxwell house can and all will be just fine..image

I'm guessing the OP has never been to the L.A. Convention Center area. If he has then he probably has not explored the area around the convention center. Verifiable with Google Maps, there is not a single hotel that is attached to the convention center. There is only one hotel, a Holiday Inn, that is within a half mile of the convention center. That Holiday Inn, needless to say, is not an impressive place.

There is a Ritz-Carlton under construction that is very close by, but that hotel is not yet open.

Perhaps the facts should be known before the rush to criticism is commenced.

Hey Timber. Let me give you a little history. I went to Pitt. A very, very close friend of mine back then was Art Rooney II. I was an avid fan from 1972-1976. When I moved to Chicago I was a Steelers fan...but living in Chicgo one can't resist the allure of the Bears. And I embraced then, through good and bad as Steelers fans did for so many horrible years. It's loyalty and supporting your home team.

Do I want the Bears to beat the Steeler? You bet your ass I do. But I will never not like the boys from the 'burgh. Nope, never.

I'm with StG on this one. I'm staying at the WG and it is just way too far away from the convention center. I will certainly check out the "official hotel" for geography before booking for the Boston ANA next year. At least they have free wifi and free breakfast (assuming you can get to the 15th floor).

As for the Steelers........Mr. Cutler will carve them up good image
