is there a difference in bccg and BGS grading?

Which is better to have a card graded under? or does it even matter? Will one increase the value more? Thanks

Trust the bccg card to be 2 grades lower in the BGS holder. But not in all cases. There have been stories of bccg cards crossing over at or near the same grade.

So BGS would grade with a tighter "stricterness" system? Why even grade a card with bccg then?

  • When i search for bgs cards graded on ebay, i search with -bccg option, just so i don't see bccg items at all...i hope that is a hint.
BCCG is a joke, and I would not even consider buying a card graded by bccg.

One thing I will say though is they don't charge to reholder a card as a "seperate service" and require you to pay $16.50 additional postage like psa does though.

That is the million dollar question.

BCCG is a joke. Their "10" is defined as "Mint or Better". Their "9" is "Near Mint or Better". What a joke.

I'll make it easy for you. 99% of the cards submitted to BCCG are from dealers that know the cards would be 8's-9's in BGS or PSA slabs.

They submit to BCCG just to get that falsely graded 10 just so newbies to the hobby can buy them up.

BCCG 2-3 grades lower.....................................maybe 1-2 in Modern cards. Case and point, i had a BCCG 8 1963 topps Bombers Best card............crossed to SGC 60 5 ex.

What I loved about BCCG when they first came out is I sent in about 5-6 BCCG 10's (they classify as mint themselves) to get them put into BGS/BVG holders. Not one crossed over as a 9. I had a nice back and forth with a CSR from there on how a card they classified as mint (and the ones I had were very strong looking cards) wouldn't even cross over within their own service, and how misleading and useless it was. In the end I told them to put the cards back in the BCCG slabs. I haven't sent beckett a card since...of course I wouldn't now anyway since PSA's sell for more and (to me) PSA does a better job of catching trims, etc.

Folks who are unfamiliar with grading need to understand that the numbers don't mean the same thing across the various third party graders. Look at each companies respective grading standards for each grade to understand what the card should theoretically be in another company's slab.

One of the biggest things even "experienced" (meaning people who pay for third party grading) hobbyists fail to realize is that a PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 have nearly identical grading standards...a BGS 10 is theoretically a step above. However, because PSA doesn't slab anything higher than GEM Mint, there are many PSA Gems that would cross to a BGS 10 Pristine.

In my opinion BGS 10 was some subjective creation to give the illusion that BGS has a better quality grading system. Being the third guy on the block allows this though...you can take someone else's idea and make it "better." PSA lead the way from the beginning. Everyone else had to create gimmicks to give the appearance of quality.

hey guys, i really appreciate the info and help. I've never graded before and you all gave me some great advice. I think i'll stick with PSA when i decide to do some submissions.

Submitting using BCCG can save you pennies for each card you send in. Those pennies add up over time.

I think BCCG was created for Home Shopping Network so they could scream "GRADED A GEEEEEEEEEMMM MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNT TEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNN BY BECKETT !!!!!"

Then it crossed to the same grade. A BCCG 8 means ex (actually ex to ex-mt).

Beckett should still take reasonable care that cards graded BCCG 10 cross to at least BVG/BGS 9 (and same for other BCCG to BGS equivalents). I get having the cheaper BCCG grading with the twisted/lower scale (more money in grading fees when people want to bump it to a better slab), but how is it right that they won't cross over to their BGS/BVG equivalent? That's what drew my ire.

  • so where does BVG fit into this mess?

I meant to post about this the other day. It seems Beckett now has a hybrid holder for BCCG that could easily confuse a new collector. I would just link the pic, but I don't know how with the new ebay. Check out this holder.

BVG is Beckett Vintage Grading. I think anything submitted 1980-earlier automatically gets labeled BVG. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Agreed. For a very long time, it was virtually impossible to get a SINGLE subgrade of 10 on a BGS card, much an overall grade of BGS 10. Look around on eBay and you'll likely find that on the older BGS graded cards (where the subgrades are on the back), it will be very rare to find a card with a single subgrade of BGS 10 and/or an overall grade of BGS 10.

Here's a thread from Net54Baseball that talks about BCCG/BGS. Go to post #23 (on page 3) of the thread for some insight from an actual Beckett employee.

BCCG was designed for three reasons:

    (1) To make Beckett extra money for those that do not actually pay for "Real" grading
    (2) For dealers and bulk sellers to be able to say the card graded a 10, "The highest grad Beckett gives out", so that they can dupe new collectors into thinking they are getting a great card cheap.
    (3) To allow those whiney people who think their "vintage" late 80s/early 90s stuff to have a gem mint 10 and can sell it on craigslist and put a fortune on the price tag.

Bottom line - BCCG is a joke, and in my opinion, makes their BGS/BVG line of grading seem a little less attractive
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
