Great footage of a coin shop smash & grab

Thief was after one thing only: a (gawd awful) 11-oz gold "medallion" inset with diamonds and rubies.
But if you haven't seen it yet, it's worth watching the video clip to see just how fast a thief can be in and out of a coin shop (or pawn shop, or jewelry store) with the goods...

I always wonder this when I see coin shop thefts...

It would have been different had he had a gun and pointed it at you or at least made a threatening guesture, but none of that happened. Defending yourself against injury is one thing, but shooting at a robber who has fled your store with only a hammer is another.

Crazy society!
<< <i>The woman with the gun seems pretty reckless shooting out into the busy parking lot.

<< <i>20-year-old bullets, properly stored, should be perfectly good. >>
I think it was a case of the "I had a hole in my glove" excuse.
Clearly she is untrained in the use of firearms as a defense.
She should either become trained or dump the pistol before she injures someone in her own family, as many gun owners do.
<< <i>20-year-old bullets, properly stored, should be perfectly good. >>
Don't think the problem was the ammo. More likely she limp-wristed & jammed the first shots. I'm surprised that she was able to clear the jams & fire a third, actually.
IMO, firing was probably inappropriate in this circumstance, however. I agree that it could be a borderline call, though, so I won't second-guess her.
Glad it wasn't me.
<< <i>And she is a complete moron for the pursuit and fire out the door. >>
She is fortunate that the gun mis-fired, otherwise the robber might own a new coin store
2 things:
1) that woman is really lucky that she didn't actually shoot the thief since he was already well outside of the shop when she fired her gun.....she most likely would have been charged with assault/murder....
2) that was one ridiculous looking "medallion" and looked fake...."11 ounces of gold with 3 flawless diamonds"................BS!
The clerk sure didn't look like she handled guns much.

<< <i>Too bad she didn't hit him in the head with a few speed hollow points. If she killed him, I doubt she would be charged because the prosecutors know there are too many people like me who are fed up with criminals and the liberal bleeding hearts that coddle them to ever get a conviction. >>
Yeah, but what if a stray bullet pierced the head of an infant being carried on the back of the hapless child's parent while walking through the busy parking lot? Would that be too bad? Would that be criminal? Who would be coddled then by the bleedin' 'earts and liberals?

That's a totally different situation. A shooter is always responsible for what gets hit in his line of fire. Yes, if she shot an innocent bystander, she should be charged with manslaughter.

I agree--the thief deserves nothing less.

Empty Nest Collection
The good coin shops in my area:
1) Are not pristine and clean like that one
2) Do not have gaudy 11 ounce christ medallions with three perfect diamonds and one ruby right up front.
But I do not condone robbery for sure. I hope the criminals suffer.
<< <i>this is the best comment so far, why would you put that high price item so close to the door..... >>
Do you suppose maybe the store owner reads this message board and has seen all the complaints about shops where nothing but common junk is out on display and you have to ask to see the "good stuff"?
Why was she hiding in the doorway?
<< <i>The gun firing was not necessary. She had no reason to fear for her life.
Why was she hiding in the doorway? >>
Maybe she wanted to stop the thief from getting away with her hard earned property.
<< <i>Why was she hiding in the doorway? >>
If I had to guess, it's because she suspected the thief might have a gun. Sometimes, they do.

My point exactly. And given that the gun misfired twice, it seems quite likely that if she did hit anyone outside the store it would've been even odds that it could've been a pedestrian. So, why take the risk? It clearly points to a lack of training. Not only in the use of firearms, but how to handle them in tense situations and what the written law is.
I've seen this situation myself in my own neighborhood, and foolishly or not, yelled at the homeowner to not shoot (from a position behind her, yet.) All she ended up with was a broken car window and not a lawsuit that would take her house away, or worse.

in case he threw that chunk of gold at her
If they have such rare coins, why not have a security guard in the store, or at least have somebody else in the store, near the door
<< <i>this is the best comment so far, why would you put that high price item so close to the door.....hell, why not have a sidewalk sale !!!! >>
Why not just display it in the drive thru..........That front case should be full of moderns only.........
I think that all crooks should be shot at , coming or going !
Dan
just my opinion though what do i know......
<< <i>IMHO shouldnt that particular type of merchandise be in a much more secure display/location in the store such as its own display an inch thick hammer/bullet resistant???? >>
The shopkeeper did look 5 beers short of a 6 pack. IMHO
Too bad I cannot find any good pictures of such a piece to share with the forum.
<< <i>I wonder what it looks like now that he dropped it and it rolled accross the parking lot? >>
Reeded edge?
Call the police, file an insurance claim, buzz people in.
As for an inside job, why not? $20K is $20k and the economy is in the crapper. Can a misfire from a gun be proven? It could have been setup. Get in the car, drive away, get one round off to throw the scent of LEO's... Not hard to really plan something like that. All you need is a car and a hammer.
<< <i> Why was she hiding in the doorway? >>
<< <i>If I had to guess, it's because she suspected the thief might have a gun. Sometimes, they do. >>
Hmm maybe. But once the guy has what he came for and is in his getaway car leaving......
Usually the gun is used up until the point where you get what you want.
Someone who "hides" and acts on impulse should not be firing a gun in anger.
But I guess if your going though life wearing her face...
If you are gonna steal from someone, you should expect the possibility of getting shot, beat up, or killed.
The liberals have twisted the laws in our country, so that the crook can run away, without any fear of getting hurt.
I would categorically state that clearly she is not trained in firearms handling, I have no problem with her having a firearm and using it against a perpetrator, but I do have a problem with her not having any training whatsoever. She should at least spend some quality time out at the shooting range, and hopefully hit her intended target and not an unwarranted victim.
<< <i>Too many bleeding heart liberals on this forum.

Totally agree. I notice several forum members are blaming the victim (should have hire guards, should have had thicker glass, etc) which is just plain sick.

Not me, I just think she needs firearm training so she can use that weapon like it should be instead of as a showpiece. She should have pumped that fool full of leaden justice. Unfortunately the liberals have made it so that unless you are in Texas, you cannot use deadly force to protect your property, and only sometimes your life.

<< <i>The only reason she should have opened fire, is if her life was in danger! WHICH IT WAS NOT!

Yeah, it was all their fault for even having a shop carrying valuables; how dare they tempt some poor innocent thief that way, then have the audacity to complain about the loss.
<< <i>I agree the that the bad guy should suffer but shooting across a busy parking lot is a no no. What if she killed your kid, wife, or mother with a stray shot. >>
How do you know the parking lot was busy? If there were others in her line of fire, I doubt she would have shot at the thief. As a successful business owner, she probably has more common sense than most people.

That's the point. No one knows whether or not the parking lot was busy or not... and neither did the shop owner know. Watch the video again. She hastily runs to the door, crouches (unsteadily), and shoots, or attempts to shoot, from inside the store with the door half open. It doesn't take much of an imagination to think that a car, a bicyclist, or even a pedestrian could have passed by just then and gotten caught in her line of fire.
The fact that there were two other vehicles directly behind the getaway car in her line of fire should also not be overlooked. Given the haste in which she acted and the unsteadiness of her actions, she should have erred on the side of caution and not fired at the fleeing car.
<< <i>No one knows whether or not the parking lot was busy or not... and neither did the shop owner know. >>
The shop owner wasn't blind and it only takes a fraction of a second for someone to check their line of fire for innocent bystanders so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure the occupants in the three cars behind the fleeing car will give her the benefit of the doubt, too, right?
They should be comforted in knowing that there is no way that she could have missed her intended target and hit one of them, right?
Her husband will report the bullet hole if the store owner hit the vehicle.
Of course, this is conjecture. Just weighing in on possibilities.
Quit trying to prosecute the store owner, dweebs.

I'd guess you're from Washington State. Laws differ from State to State.
Here in Michigan it's legal to kill a fleeing felon.

The issue of legality is one issue. Another matter of concern is whether or not she acted in a safe and responsible manner that took into consideration the consequences, most importantly, the safety of all people in the immediate vicinity. Watch the video again... just as the thief leaves the store, a van from the left pulls into a parking stall directly behind the get-away vehicle.
So, all of you who are giving the store owner the green light to shoot, answer me this. If it was your spouse and your child in the vehicle beyond and the store owner kills one of them with a stray bullet, you'll say, "That's okay, the owner had a right to defend her property and sometimes collateral damage can happen as a result."
The stolen object was insured and can be replaced. How about a member of your family?
