New eBay "Benefit" for Sellers. 8.75% Final Value Fee
From a previous thread I was exploring some observations about eBay moving towards a bigging selling house environment away from auctions. And then I got the below linked message in my eBay messages. Very frustrating. See below
<< <i>
<< <i>I don't believe the best match feature hurts sales overall. I think ebays constantly trying to improve and change overall hurts though. The average ebay buyer, new or old, learns the best ways to narrow down their search's so as to not have to sort through 100,000 items. No one likes change and trying to keep up with ebay changes becomes a royal pain. Right now the economy is hurting sales more than anything. To many unemployed and to many in fear they may become unemployed. >>
This has come in increased final value fees as all you sellers are probably aware. But I think more insiduous are the policies which favor sellers who move a lot of product quickly rather than those who specialize or generally have few items. The powerseller program, the preferential search for volume sellers, the preference for those who offer free shipping (smaller sellers can't always afford this). Encouragement of Buy it now listings over auction listings. All these things are signs that eBay has really nowhere else to go. As a seller who usually only places one or two listings a month, its frustrating to see my own listings not come up when explicit search should have brought them forward.
>>
Case in point
eBay is raising Final Value Fees to 8.75%. But notice the detail information. They are pretending to offer a service of free listing fees for the first 5 items. But then those five items are subjected to a near double amount in final value fees. Only after the five initial listings per month are the current FVFs applied. Like I said above, only sellers who move a lot of material will benefit from this. People who sell one or two items such as the occasional piece of bullion are now going to lose 8.75% + 3% from Paypal.
The part that is really frustrating is the big nice sign that states "free insertion fee for first 5 items" as though the seller will benefit. They will continue to move towards an online storefront environment and away from an auction house.

<< <i>The FVF is capped at $20, a great deal if you're selling an expensive item. >>
Phew!
That's a relief. I didn't see that point. I'm glad you guys are watching out.

From the FAQ page on the link above:
Are the new fees available to sellers who list using listing tools?
The new fees are not applicable to sellers who list items through the API/Listing tools such as Selling Manager, Selling Manager Pro, TurboLister, Bulk Sell/Relist/Revise flows (except when you relist individual listings), File Exchange, Mass Listing Editor, third party listing tools, etc. Sellers who use a third-party listing solution can either list their first 5 Auction-style listings (in 30 day period) with the new pricing structure through the Sell Your Item form or continue with their current practices at the current pricing.
Sellers who move a lot of material most likely already don't use the SYI form and won't be affected. Smaller sellers who don't want to be charged these new fees can download (for free) TurboLister and use it to post their listings.

That just sounds painful.

yet they seem to justify sucking auctionhouse commissions without all the 'legwork'
for some reason, they like Amazon model
yahoo or microsoft should get someone with the skills/desire to head a division to knock eBay down from market leader in online auctions
Just a ray of hope that they dropped some of their "improvements".

<< <i>Yep, for the first time in ages I setup a listing using the crappy SYI form just to take advantage of the $20 cap on FVF.

What does SYI stand for?

Russ, what different way do we have to list to take advantage of that free listing and $20 cap?? Now that I've listed all the expensive stuff...
I don't see a cap of $20.
I guess you have to relist to get this since it is a recent change.
Did this just take effect yesterday?
I can't see how ebay can survive putting a cap of $20 on FVFs.

<< <i>it's pretty obvious that ebay's huge jealousy of amazon's success is driving them farther & farther away from what they do best (true auctions). it's too bad. used to love ebay. K S >>

<< <i>Russ, what different way do we have to list to take advantage of that free listing and $20 cap?? >>
You must use the online SYI form. If you use Turbolister or any other tool, it will set it up at regular rates.
<< <i>I don't see a cap of $20. >>
It's very clear in the announcement:
Fees will be 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower
<< <i>I can't see how ebay can survive putting a cap of $20 on FVFs. >>
It's only for the first five items an individual seller lists each month, and only if that seller uses the online FYI form. Considering there are about 30 million listings on eBay, and the vast majority of those are generated using tools that don't qualify for the cap, the financial impact is minimal.
<< <i>My take on it is, use the SYI form and first 5, the total cap on the FVF is $20.00, for all 5. >>
No, it's each individual item.

As always, you (Russ) are our eBay almanac - they should pay you royalties for all you do and help others with.
The notice we received from eBay said the changes started on Tuesday, the 16th, so that's why I listed that night. As I said, they did charge .35 per auction (+ extra photo but irrelevant), and the stated price at the end of the listing page was a $27 FVF if it sold. The .35 listing fee by itself was a huge savings, but should've been free. Perhaps it will all be adjusted as things progress in our seller account. I've gotten away from using Turbo Lister and just use their SYI form anyway.
Since this started on the 16th and will apply to the first 5 each month, will the next 5 start on July 1 or July 16?

The FAQ page on the link in the original post above says this:
How will I know how many free Insertion Fees I have used during a 30 day period?
When you list an item using the Sell Your Item or Simple listing form, you will be notified directly on the form if the listing qualifies for the free Insertion Fee. You'll also be notified after you confim a listing if you have remaining free Insertion Fees.

Did you use Gallery Plus, by any chance?

No, just some fixed priced auctions, the highest was 399.99. Whoa, was this for fixed price or auction format??
Edit for another question: If it doesn't work when you relist, does it work when you select "sell similar"?
<< <i>Whoa, was this for fixed price or auction format?? >>
Only auction format, and that explains the 35c insertion fee. That's the standard FP listing fee regardless of value.

Gracias
Merci beaucoup
So now I still have my 5 left. What would I do without you?!
*Excludes items with a Start/Buy It Now/Reserve price of $18 million and above.
go figure

<< <i>As someone who often lists $1000+ coins, this is pretty good for me. >>
As someone who likes to start all of his auctions at $.99 with no reserve, am I getting shafted on my first five auctions? Sounds like a good reason to download TurboLister....

<< <i>Thanks for the info. I see it does not work if you relist. So you have to start from scratch. I never received a notice from ebay about the $20 cap or this new program at all. >>
