Honesty...Still the Best Policy...?

So...I fully expect to be flamed by some...but I'll tell the following story anyhow...

I ordered 1 UHR Gold Eagle about 3 months back...but wasn't happy with the quality...so I returned/exchanged it for a replacement.

In it's place, I received a seemingly proof-like (to my eye) replacement...very pleased...book closed. Or so I thought.

Then on Saturday...my original UHR finds it's way back to me...with all my return documentation inside (my return label had been removed and the original shipping label was visible).

So...anyone like to guess what I did this morning?!?

And...oh yeah...my credit card has only been dinged once.

Sometimes it's tough to do the right thing. I know I would have to think twice but in the end, it would be returned
and I would sleep well.

If it was Christmas time you could have dropped the first UHR in one of those red kettles.

Otherwise you returned it, if anything like the IRS it may take three or four tries for them to take it back. (Twice over the years they have sent me refunds in error, one of these errors resulted in having to return the check three times)

So...here's my answer...I wrapped it back up, went to the Post Office, insured it...and sent it back...AGAIN.

And here's the real killer...in a coincidence...I mailed it along with my quarterly estimated federal tax...OUCH!

And I also called the Mint to alert them to it's arrival (and to their credit, they sounded legitimately appreciative).

But I'm saying it right now...for all to hear...if it comes back a second time...I'm going to put it in the safe and forget about it unless Uncle Sam comes a callin' someday. Then it would be like the dog that follows you home...it was MEANT to be!

I expected that you sent it back, but if it comes to you again in error then do not be tempted to keep the coin. The US Mint will come after you via The Treasury Department when they reconcile your account and they can make life very nasty.

YOU DID THE RIGHT THING, whether we like it or not people's jobs depend on honesty...no matter what business you are in, dishonesty costs us all..think how much chepaer things would be if no one shoplifted, think how much less coin dealers would have to spend on security etc if no one stole etc. sure , some people will always cheat, but the less who do the better for all of us....and since most of us have sold on ebay, how would you feel if you accidently sent 2 coins to a buyer instead of one-without that person's open honesty you are done.

I do sign for the first replacement, but the "buy one, get one" second UHR just magically appeared in front of my apartment door.

4 months ago the mint inadvertantly sent me 15 coin sets 2x. I only ordered 15 sets not 30.

I of course returned the 15 sets to them.

When I called the mint and tried to explain the situation it took me 20 minutes and only

after I had to speak to a supervisor did they finally understand what I was trying to do.

Yes you did the right thing.

Doesn't an honest person have integrity? Isn't a person with integrity also usually honest? So, tell us why they are different.

The problem with coins ...
... is they got to find their rightful owner.
Integrity will get them there a lot faster than honesty will.

A guy could be honest and say he has them, but without integrity they don't necessarily get sent back.

pretty simple to figure out. "honest" is to ALWAY tell the truth NO MATTER WHAT. but integrity is knowing WHEN to tell the truth.

telling your wife she's fat is honest, but lacks integrity.

You're right technically, Dorkkarl. On the other hand, you can't have integrity without honesty, and it's rare to see honesty without a large dose of integrity along with it. So I give the guy a pass on grounds of semantics.
Incidentally, I think the really sad commentary is the clapping emoticons and praise extended to him returning the coin. In my world (and yours I suspect), there really was no other option.
What he does deserve is sympathy for having to jump through all the hoops to return the coin. Doing the honest thing should at least be easy...

I wouldn't return it until I was sure I wasn't going to be charged again, but I would contact the seller. I have unfortunately come to be a beliver in the maxim "no good deed goes unpunished."

i agree that "integrity" requires honesty. however it needs other factors as well, which is why i do not equate them like that other dude did

you could be someone who makes 100% honest statements & have no integrity.

Yep, honesty is the best policy, particularly when it comes to dealin' with Uncle Sam.

I can certainly see the temptation, but who knows what might happen down the road, if you were to succumb to that temptation and somebody on the other end found out about it.

If you do the right thing, at least you'll get credit for it here.
