It is hard to grade from the image, the obverse looks alittle weakly struck in the ear. I would think EF40 possibly 45, however, my opinion would change if the coin has more lustre than what is apparent than what the image suggests. It looks alittle flat. It is very difficult to find decent examples of this series- I would be happy with this one based upon what is typically seen.

To be honest it does have more lustre but my pictures make it look a bit flat. It's quite hard to image in the slab and my camera doesn't allow me to do much adjusting i.e. white balance etc..

    Is this any better?

I think the first image is better-

I like the coin and 40-45 seems appropriate. However, my opinion may change to AU after seeing in hand to appreciate the lustre, determine whether there are hairlines etc. Again, I would be happy with this one

    It was given an XF45.

I had thought 45 perhaps a shot at 50 after searching through countless images on Heritage archives of similar coins.

I purchased it raw for just over half the PCGS guide price of a 45 so I'm a happy camper.

    Edited to add:
I'm starting to develop a soft spot for US gold coins.

Thats a killer 45. And I could see that residing in a 50 holder easily and still being nice for the grade.

My initial thought was an XF/AU liner, but I think there's enough wear on the ear and the shield that
a 50 holder is a distinct long shot (at PCGS, anyway).

I agree but I think these were also softly struck in the centre.

    Here's a NGC MS63:
Take a look at the ear and top hand side of the shield:

A fair point. I still think trying for an upgrade would be a losing proposition monetarily.

That coin does not look like an XF at all to me..

Looks to be AU55 . These are often overgraded too.

    Here's a picture of an NGC/CAC AU53

    And here's a picture of a PCGS AU50

That coin sure looks better than a 45 to me. Silent net grade perhaps?

    FLoops

The first AU53 has terriifc lustre and I do not think that one was overgraded by NGC

The second image reflects what is wrong with our hobby... that coin has been enhanced to the point where it looks to be dripping with lustre, however, the coin completely lacks originality to the point where I would not want it. Someone suceeded in terms of getting the coin in a 50 holder, but it came at the expense of originality... I'll pass on that one

Agree. Looks AU but it may have been silently net graded for something like a light cleaning.
