haven't done it myself, but I'd likely only feel bad about it if they had the coin on the BST first and I never made an offer on it. If they went straight to eBay or refused an offer of mine through the BST, then I wouldn't feel bad at all image

I have in the past, but I did place my highest bid on the item and nobody bid against me or the item.

It was a rip when you look at what previous sales on the items that I won had gone for, but I'm sure that the seller understood the possibilities of what would happen.

Do I feel bad? Considering I like this particular person and what he has brought here to the boards, yes. He is an upstanding dealer/collector here and I'm sure many of you have dealt with him in the past or are now.

So Carl Wolforth- I apologize in all honesty for ripping you a few times on the flea. I got a great deal on the items and you are one hell of a guy.

and I aint that far behind you on the 56 registry mint set buddy boy... image

Um, no. Example: I once picked off a 1965 NGC MS65CAM SMS Kennedy from Marty for $32. Got it in to a PCGS MS65DCAM holder, and sold it for $670.

I dont play on ebay, but an auction is an auction.

If it was that big of a rip, where if it happened to me Id be uppset, ID offer to sell the coin back for a slight profit. Like cover all my shipping costs.

If it was a rip on a BST deal, then I would offer the coin back for what I paid.

Just seems more like the right way to do things to me...
    But to each their own.

If it didnt DCAM at PCGS, would it have sold for that much?

An upgrade or a new designation on a cross doesnt seem like a rip to me honestly. More like having a different eye for coins.

not a fan of ebay, but why if the coin was put up for auction and you were high bidder should you feel bad about it? Would the member who sold a coin on ebay or any other venue to you as high bidder for a ridiculously high price feel bad for you?

I've NEVER ripped a coin on eBay under any circumstances, perhaps I should feel bad about that?

    I'd rather rip a stranger. A deal's a deal though regardless.

I'd also note that I've been picked off by forum members. And, they got a hearty congratulations. They earned it through superior knowledge.

About two years ago, I won an old ANACS 1908 S Indian Cent in 63 RD. Promptly got it into a PCGS 65 RD, believing it had the potential to go 66. Evidently, our Rick Snow thought that it was PQ as well. He paid me well over Greysheet ASK. No remorse on my end!

I sold a colorful mint set NGC 66 quarter to a forum member (and a friend of mine) a while back.
He promptly put it on ebay to flip it.
Just for fun I put a lowball bid on it for considerably less than I sold it to him for and sure enough,
I ended up winning the darn thing back. image

Every so often I'll drop a sympathy bid on something and end up winning it. If it was something I wasn't attached to in the first place. I might let the seller off the hook, for example by offering to 'return' the item without having him bother to ship it to me first. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened.

It's not shill bidding if the seller doesn't know about it. FWIW, I've never placed a bid with the intention of going back on it. But as the thread title says, sometimes I've felt bad about it after the fact.

I don't think I've done it more than a dozen times in as many years. Usually the seller was grateful. I think one or two of them insisted on carrying through on the deal at the too-low price, and I certainly didn't have a problem with that either. Then there was the one memorable seller who might have been grateful, but sure picked a strange way to show it ("In all my years selling, I've never had a buyer who was so stupid...")

Another case that happens from time to time is if a seller lists two lots that are clearly belong together, where I win one and lose the other. In a case like that, I might tell the seller that I'd step aside and let him sell "my" lot to the winner of the other lot for the sake of keeping the set together, if the he and the other seller wanted to do that. That doesn't always work out either, but at least I feel less bad about breaking the set if the offer is made.

I once picked off a nice Lincoln cent DDO for a $3.95 Buy It Now, and in the payment instructions the seller said he'd made a mistake in the listing but would follow through with the deal. I felt bad for the guy and sent him a check for $39.95, which was much closer to the true value of the coin.

i made what i consider a significant rip not long ago, and never felt the least bit guilty until i was talking to a fellow forum member soon afterward and he wondered what happened to the coin bcuz he bid twice what i paid for it, but the seller ended it early and im not talking about a few hundred bux i felt bad not because the seller lost money but becuz the forum member really wanted the coin.... just not as bad as i did. lol

If you consider getting a $300 for $80 shipped a rip, then yes I have done it and I did feel sorry for the seller(Forum member)

    Not that I know of.

Any eBay auction is risky for the seller. By starting low (like $.99 no reserve) you seem to get more bidders involved and some take being outbid personally which drives the price up. But it doesn't always work that way and sometimes you sell much lower than you intended. I've had other stuff sell for prices that are extreme on the high side (DE Quarter Coin Covers come to mind), so I figure it just balances out over the log run.
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!
