Spotty 2009 Lincoln MS68 graded coin, I don't get it.

Ok, this coin is graded MS68 by NGC. Take a look at the close up pictures, especially the lower right of the obverse. I see several of the infamous spots that plague these new pennies. How did this get a 68? Are they ignoring the spots and grading "through" the visible spots? Did they grade it without any magnification? I just don't get it.

  • Looks spotty from here. For 2 points from perfect I expect no spots. And minted this year no less.

Thats not bad at all, certainly not too distracting. There are ZERO recent lincolns with out spots.

I understand your point that there are zero recent lincolns out with spots, but are the TPGs ignoring the fact that millions have yet to be gone through? Are they simply saying "Oh well, they will all have spots, lets ignore the spots and grade the rest of the coin."? To me the coins that we are seeing are not as intended and not up to the quality the mint usually produces. I personally feel they need to be graded to include the spots or BB'd. I smell a rat...

Let us say for a minute, that the spots were the exception and not the rule. Would they BB the spotted ones as some type of environmental damage or something else? Think about it for a minute... a few coins here and there exhibit spots so they are either graded to include the spots or BBd. The rest of submitted coins without spots are graded accordingly and life goes on. BUT, this does not seem to be the case. Are TPGs realizing that if they don't grade the spotted ones, they essentially have put themselves out a LOT of money in fees? I don't like this at all.

I just don't feel that the very poor quality of these new pennies should result in a change in "attitude" or "policy". I know that spotted coins have been around for years, but this years pennies are just plain aweful. If I am way off, please tell me.

These are a different kind of spot, im newbie o.

Some kind of look like dishwasher spots.

A combination of dried cleaning solution and dirt/grease?

they don't apper to be the same spots that slowly creep up on the Zincolns. And the pictures shown are the good examples. Many look like the've been sprayed.

This is a little disheartening. Going through about 10 dollars worth of P mint Formative Years from the bank I got rid of several pennies that had pristine surfaces.......but a TON of milk spots. Had I known that the grading services were going too ignore the spots I would have kept an additional 15-20 coins that may have been acceptable for good grades based on NGC opinion.

Easy there ambro.....once upon a time there was a 1963 PR70 Lincoln too. It was taken off the market after developing some nasty 'spots'image

One time I STARED at my coin on the computer screen....and grew angry and frustrated over two spots that had appeard.

then I scrolled up a tad....the spots were on the monitor screen. image

Thats actually a pretty good example. The camera tends to see these spots more than the eye, for some reason.

Go back and look at the Heritage auction archives at some of the home team MS68 recent lincolns.

Its spots AND tiny bag marks/nicks......sometimes you find one with very few spots...and then, there is a nick or two somewhere.

(those white fang holders though...ugh. dont they know there is such a thing as clear plastic?)

2009's are spotted no more or no less than recent years. Its just that more people are looking at them THIS year.
There is a case to be made that since the coin comes from the US Mint with these spots, they are 'as minted' and TPG's could very well allow any amount of spots without a second glance.

thankfully that is not the case.

THOUGH for the life of me I do not understand how PCGS has failed to use its considerable clout to at least make an appeal to the US Mint to change their proceedure.

(next required post is the obligatory "the mint is in the business of making circulating coins and not for the benefit of collectors blah blah blah)
  • I cant believe they would grade a ms68 with all the spotting on them.
