<< <i>Ok guys, so I won a nice looking Morgan Dollar on eBay for $71. The shipping on the auction stated Priority Mail for $12, plus $10 for insurance. I wasn't going to bid because of this high rate, but then saw that the seller had answered a question about the shipping fees, reproduced here:
Q: Shipping really $12 USPS is $4.95 with .70 conformation. Insurance should be included right
A: I will ship to the winning bidder in any manner (and at any cost) they desire. Only actual shipping cost will be charged. Thanks, Pete
So this reassured me that I wouldn't have to pay $12 for shipping. So I send the seller a request for the invoice, mentioning that I would like it sent first class, which would be less than $5, insured. He then sends me an invoice for the full $12! This guy has a 100% feedback rating, so I sent him an email in which I told him if he wouldn't lower his shipping costs, I would be forced to leave negative feedback. What do you guys think about the situation. Am I in the right?

Here we go, calling me a liar again. I originally was going to send the negative feedback threat, but did not. I sent the exact email I reproduced on the forum. Looking back on our history, you have a knack for being wrong about me, so maybe you should just take my word for it this time so you won't look like such jerk.
As I mentioned earlier, I have a transaction pending with this same seller.
He invoiced me $22 to ship a $350 coin. When I inquired about the high charge he said that he normally ships registered mail but would charge me for whatever shipping method I wanted. I want insured first class mail.
I did not receive a new invoice; so, I paid the $22 and asked for a rebate. We'll see what happens.

Thanks a lot! Seems you're having the same problem I am. I'm not saying it was right for me to say what I did, but the seller simply isn't doing what he promised in the listing.

This guy may have found out the hard way that ebay won't let sellers send new or revised invoices. I have no idea why but it is a PITA. Ebay doesn't try to be business friendly.
As for shipping charges, it would be very easy to google "shipping coins" and find threads here with blanket statements like, "Never ship coins any other way but registered, period."
<< <i>> so I sent him an email in which I told him if he wouldn't lower his shipping costs, I would be forced to leave negative feedback
I don't like ultimatums or threats, especially from buyers emboldened by ebay's stupid feedback rules. There are more sensible ways to handle this. Think.
Lance. >>
Yup, I'd tell you to go ahead and neg me, then I'd NPB ya and get the neg removed.
End result = No coin for you.
Of course, I am a bit of a jerk so YMMV.

Since sellers can't send new invoices, I decided that I was not going to win, so I just went ahead and paid. The coin looks like it has a lot of potential from the lousy pictures, so I'm excited to see it in hand.
Pharmer ? I'll bet he would cross it to PCGS and get a fortune for it, and that's what you might consider doing, too That's a great coin for the money, and based on principle, I'd like to thank you for showing us.

You can send a new/revised invoice from PayPal without a problem. Or you can send a revised invoice from eBay and just add a discount in the box. It's not hard at all to do either of these options.
<< <i>You can send a new/revised invoice from PayPal without a problem. Or you can send a revised invoice from eBay and just add a discount in the box. It's not hard at all to do either of these options. >>
It might not be hard if you already know how to send a revised invoice, but if you don't...
I don't use eBay's website for managing my auctions- I have a third party program for that. Last month, a bidder won a couple of auctions, and I emailed him payment info. He wrote back and asked for an eBay invoice, which I sent. He proceeded to buy a couple of other items out of my eBay store, so I emailed him with updated payment info, which included a copy&paste link to use on PayPal plus a request for payment directly from PayPal. He wrote back saying he wanted to pay through eBay and asked for another eBay invoice with all items combined. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to send an invoice which included both the new purchases and the ones for which an invoice had been sent, and if you asked me today to tell you how I did it or die, I'd say "Kill me now" because I don't remember.
eBay's website is not exactly the most user-friendly place for people unfamiliar with how to do stuff on it and when you couple that with the constant changes they seem determined to keep making, there's not necessarily anything easy about it.
<< <i>However, in general, many people don't take into account the other charges that sellers must cover. In my listings, I remind people that the shipping fee I charges covers 1) The postage 2) Shipping materials (labels, envelopes, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc..) and 3) Time (time to print, pack, and drop-off)... if you only made $20 an hour and it takes you 10 mins to prep and drop-off a package, that's $3.33. >>
You might want to think about changing your listings- eBay doesn't allow you to charge for your time:
Fees related to Shipping & Handling: Gasoline, mileage, time spent at a carrier, time spent packaging the item, eBay and PayPal fees may not be added. >>
I think every seller on Ebay should just send the item they sold to the buyer and GIVE them the shipping fee as a sign of gratitude, thanking you as the customer for being so vigilant to buy an item for less than its actual cost or value. This makes me as a person feel obligated to sell everything I have for pennies on the dollar and then spend MY TIME, MONEY, ENERGY,GAS, WEAR N TEAR ON MY VEHICLE, getting it to the PO as fast as I possibly can. Oh- if you happen to live in a country that requires customs documents to be filled out- well hell I'll just hop on a plane and drop it off at your door- why bother with all that paper.
Here is food for thought- DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM EBAY. >>
Some more food for thought - DON'T SELL ANYTHING ON EBAY!
Seems to me the buyer was in the higher moral position. He blew it by "threatening" the Seller. I belive that if he had used some more "tact" that he would be in a better position with the Seller. After all honey captures more bees than vinegar.
And if you're selling on ebay, especially with auctions, don't offer it up if you're not willing to accept the hammer price. You're critique of Paul can be applied to you in reverse based on the content of your post.
Cheers!

This was the poison pill that soured the Seller-Buyer relationship. But the buyer was at least right in his anticipation that the Seller would provide an invoice based on the "implied" shipping charges from the Q/A reply posted in the auction before it closed.
Methinks the buyer jumped to conclusions and I am certain he will learn from this experience. Confrontation does not build goodwill in buyer/seller relationships. The problem with ebay is that everyone is anonymous and seemingly miniscule misunderstanding can balloon into a full-fledged flame war, like we're witnessing here!
Good Luck!

But since you're so thick, here's EXACTLY what I sent the seller once again.
"Dear XXXXXXXXXX,
In a question in your auction, you said that only the actual shipping cost will be assessed. I asked you to send the coin first class. This would cost less than $5, insured. Even if you sent it Priority, insured, it would only be $8. If you don't want to lower your exorbitant shipping costs, I will pay your high rate, but you better be paying the $12 you say you will be for shipping, or I will not be leaving positive feedback.
Thanks!"
I really don't know why you always want to start an argument with me. All I did was essentially misquote myself. Get over it.
-Paul >>
But as Mr.Steelheader eloquently put it a few times this is NOT how you posed it to the board, therefore what you are telling us is BS and you in any event lied about what you said to the seller.
If I were the seller I would give you the option right now to walk away, then block you from ever bidding on my items again- no need for the silliness on what might be to your advantage in more ways than one. >>
Again, you are taking what Ken says as fact, that I am lying. Which I am not. I simply misquoted myself. I originally had typed up the "negative feedback" version, but I did NOT send it to the buyer, it was changed to what I quoted. Must I point out Ken's history of trying to slander me? Back in late '07 he tried to turn the forum against me by telling everyone that I was lying about a certain coin shop experience. Want to remind everyone how that turned out Ken? Oh right, you had to apologize to me publicly for completely making up the whole story about me lying. Just like you're doing here.
-Paul >>
Read your original post and tell me who lied!!! That was not a misquote, it was just a plain lie.
stinkinlincoln Mr Stink, or Mr Lincoln. Your ability to actually link a message here is truly astounding but it also has nothing to do with this post. Thanks for playing
No problem. I just think its funny that you run to ebay threads to call people a whiner, and yet you yourself whine here about ebay and your BS problems. Grow up.
Dieclash: Yesterday was brought on by a bet from a friend that I could get the post count up to 100 within 6 hours. I won a hundred bucks and am more than happy to send everyone a dollar, it was that much fun.
"so I sent him an email in which I told him if he wouldn't lower his shipping costs, I would be forced to leave negative feedback."
That is essentially what I told him, I just said it in a nicer manner:
"If you don't want to lower your exorbitant shipping costs, I will pay your high rate, but you better be paying the $12 you say you will be for shipping, or I will not be leaving positive feedback."
Tell me how these two are different. The only thing I changed is my rewording of the negative feedback to positive feedback so it would not sound so threatening to the seller.
Even the toned-down version of the communication sounds like extortion.
It boils down to: "reduce the price or suffer a non-positive feedback".
I understand the seller sent a message indicating they will charge only the actual cost and you are angry that this does not seem to be happening. I usually respond to these auctions by bidding lower, by an amount offset by shipping. Or not bidding at all. In fact, I feel that most bidders take shipping into account. Thus, are you really paying a premium here? But that is my opinion, isn't it?
Personally, I feel the feedback system should be primarily about the product. In my opinion, the coin looks good and warrants a positive feedback.
You could always say "great coin, expensive shipping" in the feedback.
You could always rate the seller low on the DSR star system in the shipping category.
I spent well over $5 of my life reading this stupid thread. That's my fault.
If this is a battle over principles, then I suggest you pick your battles better.

I don't necessarily agree, because the seller didn't do what he promised when he answered the shipping question in the auction. He promised one thing, and delivered another after I had won the auction.

I don't owe anyone an apology. Ken is the one stirring the pot, because he got caught in a huge lie by me a year and a half ago and is holding a grudge. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you obviously don't have all of the information to be making value judgments about me. I'm done arguing. I have explained myself enough. I have already agreed that I probably shouldn't have said what I did to the seller, so what are you so annoyed about? I have reproduced the exact email that I sent the seller on the forum multiple times, so read that before you tell me I deserve to be physically harmed.

Some Good points Adam. May I add?: The Seller in this case was chargin 17% on top of hammer value for shipping. Pretty high if you ask me. The potential Buyer inquired and was assured that shipping costs would be actual cost at time of shipment. Much less than 17% IMO. The Buyer over reacted if you will, when confronted with the original invoice and the implied agreed-upon shipping charges were much higher than expected. This is the complaint of the original OP. How the OP communicated his concerns to the Seller is certainly in question as to going 'overboard'. Regardless of how the OP mishandled the communication between himself and the Seller is moot if you ask me. The buyer has a legitimate complaint.
As for the ebay FB system, I believe it is not just about buy and sell prices, but moreover the complete transaction which includes quality of product, packing, shipping, and overall price. I think the OP was quite satisfied with the merchandise and hammer price but had a legitimate issue with shipping charges.
Where he went astray was threatening less than a positive FB on the transaction if he had to pay full shipping charges, which he was willing do do, albeit reluctantly after the implied condition that shipping charges would be amended in the original invoice, but they weren't.
Sorry for the windy post. and BTW I do get the folks who think the buyer's concern is overly dramatic. But I also agree that this buyer held the moral high-ground until the impliead threat of a non-positive FB score.
This thread should be considered for its educational value more so than it's entertainment value, but I do love a good controversy all the same.

He invoiced me $22 to ship a $350 coin. When I inquired about the high charge he said that he normally ships registered mail but would charge me for whatever shipping method I wanted. I want insured first class mail.
I did not receive a new invoice; so, I paid the $22 and asked for a rebate. We'll see what happens.

I don't like ultimatums or threats, especially from buyers emboldened by ebay's stupid feedback rules. There are more sensible ways to handle this. Think.

<< <i>
<< <i>
<< <i>However, in general, many people don't take into account the other charges that sellers must cover. >>
Excessive Shipping Charges Policy
Charges not allowed in Shipping & Handling:

Good Luck!

That was a mistake by me. I did not say that to the seller. As I stated earlier, I originally had something along those lines, but sent the quoted message instead. You really are a jerk, as whenever you're wrong, you just repeat your accusations over and over, even after they have been refuted. But since you're so thick, here's EXACTLY what I sent the seller once again.
"Dear XXXXXXXXXX,
In a question in your auction, you said that only
the actual shipping cost will be assessed. I

would cost less than $5, insured. Even if you

you better be paying the $12 you say you will be

feedback.
Thanks!"

Oh right, you had to apologize to me publicly for completely making up the whole story about me lying. Just like you're doing here.

you better be paying the $12 you say you will be

Tell me how these two are different. The only thing I changed is my rewording of the negative feedback to positive feedback so it would not sound so threatening to the seller.

That he did!
It boils down to:
"reduce the price or suffer a non-positive feedback".
