Books

Sitting in front of a computer screen can be a real drag at times and stepping away to read from an actual book (yes they still exist) can be a nice break, especially when it's hobby related!

If anyone wants to indulge me with some recommended reads, that would be nice, and who knows, maybe a board member or two can swap a book as a result of this discussion or pick one up before vacation season kicks in.

Here's three of mine:
Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis
Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero by David Maraniss
Card Sharks: How Upper Deck Turned a Child's Hobby Into a High-stakes, Billion-dollar Business by Pete Williams.

Thanks! Look forward to your responses.

  • I recommend "Card Collecting for Dummies".
  • IF you like Moneyball, read The Blind Side by Lewis, both very good, easy reads. Also, if you like the book about Clemente, same author wrote When Pride Still Mattered, it's about Vince Lombardi, also a very good and interesting read, however it is long.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Anything by Bill James or Rob Neyer. I am looking forward to Joe Posnanski's book about the Big Red Machine. I am currently reading Feinstein's book about Glavine and Mussina, and enjoying it immensely.

<< <i>The Card (about the famous Wagner) Operation Bullpen >>

Have read The Card--was a great mix between telling the story of the card but also Honus himself, although I think it takes a few unsubstantiated shots at the original purchaser of the card (forget his name) at the Florida flea market that the authors insinuate was altered.

Operation Bullpen sounds enticing will have to pick that one up. Thanks

I also recommend Sportscard Counterfeit Detector by Bob Lemke (board member AUPT). Lots of good reading and hints on how to tell real from fake/reprint.

I too recommend picking up Operation Bullpen. I didn't put the book down until I was done reading it, and I swear I have some type of ADD. You can learn about the guy who penned off hundreds of thousands of forgeries that you still see circulating today, and the whole inside undercover story. Very good read.

PM sent to Jimq. Def. going to get Operation Bullpen. I just can't resist to mention a non-sports one: Cold Mountain (Civil War)--so much better than the movie. by Charles Frazier.

I would recommend Ball Four. I also just read Red and Me, the latest book by Bill Russell about he and Red Auerbach. Was a pretty fun read. If you like basketball, Breaks of the Game is almost a must read. If you like golf, read Open by John Feinstein about putting together the 02 US Open at Bethpage Black. I'm looking forward to Bill Simmons The Book of Basketball.

Well, we do agree on one thing. Great book!

    Really enjoyed "The Card"

Fair enough--I am going to have to reread Cold Mountain. The ending of that book left my jaw dropped for a week, freakin' unbelievable. I think Arcade Fire has a song based on that book but then again I might be wrong.

I would second "The Blind Side" Great book

Also "Lone Survivor" Not sports related, but great military navy seal book. Rumor is it is being made into a movie by the guy that made "Friday Night Lights" One of the best books I have read in awhile.

Oh, I'm sorry. I assumed this was another stupid thread looking for a Fantasy Baseball Owner.

Instead it was just a stupid thread that has nothing to do with Sports Cards or Memorabilia.
  • Moneyball was great. I just read that they are making it into a movie. Some great 80's era books include "The Niekro Files", "The Wrong Stuff" by Bill Lee, and "The Forever Boys" about the Senior baseball league. My favorite of all time is easily "A Whole Different Ballgame" by ex MLBPA union chief Marvin Miller...a travesty that he is not in the HOF. Whether you love him or hate him, NOBODY impacted the game more over the past 40 years.

Speaking of Ball Four. Here is a photo of Jim Bouton from last Sunday.

Me? Nah...not at all. Just annoyed by all of the newb's off-topic threads. There's this whole other Sports Talk Forum that he should be made aware of.
