Sometimes... if you're patient long enough...

... surprises happen.

As you (may or may not) know, I collect British fractional farthings by date. Here and there, not really concentrating on one particular denomination over another. Slowly but surely I've been able to gather a nice run in mint state.

Still, no proofs in my collection, despite my keeping an eye out for one. I wanted to keep the price well under $1K. Not particular as to date; I just want a representative example.

I ended up being outbid on this one at David Lawrence, which sold over for over $900.

I made an offer on this one, but even after several email exchanges, the lowest they would go is $925.

Fast forward to this week and I see a few in the Heritage auction (most are above my desired price point though). Lo and behold, that first coin above is now listed in this auction. So I put in a lowball bid, assuming I'd get blown out.

Not so much. I was the only bidder. $690 including BP.

Woohoo!

Can now check that one off the list... image
