  • A drilled (holed ) CBH, pre-Civil War:

    was marked and sown into clothes of soldier going in to battle; in the (quite likely ) case of his demise, they knew where he came from.

    This was the first "dog-tag".

    (bought one: 1835, in VF condition, except for the hole; sold it on eBay to a CivilWar buff, I guess)
    WILL WORK FOR CENTS, QUARTERS, HALVES, DOLLARS....

    1943 steel cent. Lots of history behind this coin and even a GEM does not cost very much. The "wow" factor is still high among non-collectors.

    I don't see a reason why every collection should have common denominator coin anymore, especially now that there is such as wide variety of excellent specimens to collect.
