Always took candy from strangers Didn't wanna get me no trade Never want to be like papa Working for the boss every night and day --"Happy", by the Rolling Stones (1972)
"government is not reason, it is not eloquence-it is a force! like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master; never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." George Washington
“This takes the cake,” he stormed, throwing a paperclipped stack of papers onto the hand-polished burlwood surface. “You’ve got me in a real fit of pique this time, Longacre. Oh, you may have seen me in a snit before, and I admit I’ve had my panties in a bunch more than once over your pranks, but this is an honest-to-gosh fit. A fit. Of. Pique.”
“What seems to be the problem, Sir?”
“You’ve billed more than 40 hours this week to International Allied Conglomerates.”
“Yes, and?”
“Never mind the fact that it’s only Tuesday morning. Your hours are billed to ‘Posting Forum Questions.’”
“Again I’m forced to ask: ‘And?’ Those questions don’t just write themselves, you know.”
The Man’s neck bulged at the tightly buttoned collar and his face, already blazing Mint red, went a deeper shade of crimson with tones of lavender and russet.
“If you don’t mind, Sir,” Longacre interrupted, “I’ve got a ten o’clock with my cigar-shopping assistant. Can we reconvene at. . .” He checked his hand-burnished Movado. “Say, three o’clock tomorrow afternoon?”
"Don't you dare breeze out of this office in a swirl of smoking jacket and aromatic French pipe tobacco, Longacre --- not this time!"
"I'm sorry, Sir, I really have to get to this meeting." He stood up and snapped the locks on his satchel. "I'm fresh out of hand-rolled Dominican panatelas, and I've got guests coming in this weekend. Call my secretary at noon and see if she can fit you in for martinis at the club tonight. I do want to continue this conversation."
And then, as elusive as a 1909-S V.D.B., he was gone.
