1884-S Morgan: NCS "UNC Details" or ANACS "MS60 Details"

Hi all,

I currently have a bit of a heartbreaker 1884-S Morgan with outstanding full luster and eye appeal that would grade MS62-63 if it weren't for a scratch on the reverse that got it body bagged. Anyway, I am running low on funds for the coin budget and am thinking about selling the coin - but first need to get it slabbed. I was just wondering which you think would realize a higher price:

1) NCS with "UNC Details"
2) ANACS with "MS60 Details"
3) PCGS "Genuine" (I figured this would be a poor choice because of how important it is that the coin be acknowledged as MS)

It's sort of an interesting situation as this coin of course skyrockets in price in MS - I'm not sure if a buyer would be more interested in "MS60" details or "UNC" details (then similarly NCS or ANACS).

Any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated - I know of course that it ultimately comes down to the coin and not the holder, but I'm thinking the holder could potentially influence the realized price on a coin like this under these circumstances?

Can you post a good picture of the coin? Be certain the coin is not a slider. All services are very tough on this date to award the UNC grade, and even as a details grade with a scratch on it. You may be just as well off to sell it on eBay as is with a good picture and description.

    NCS Unc.

Got a picture of the coin in question?

To answer your question though, I don't think it would matter if it was NCS or ANACS, but if it were me, I would go for the ANACS slab.
  • My camera is out of commission for the moment sadly (which is another problem I will need to remedy before ultimatley selling the coin). I am pretty positive it will go "UNC" as I have shown it to an ex-NGC grader who confirmed that the coin looks like a 62-63 if it weren't for the scratch (after which we both lamented the scratch for about an hour - what a shame).

I frankly have no real idea what the coin will go for - I figured selling it raw would be a mistake because hardly any condition rarities in MS go for their value unless they have indeed been certified as "MS"

On something like this I would go with ANACS.

Well, without a picture of the coin, it is difficult to get good help from the forum members.

    How bad is the scratch?
  • I apologize that I can't photo the coin right now - I suppose I was mainly just wondering which grading service would be my best bet. I know the severity of the scratch can't be assessed without photos.

i'm going to go against the grain here and say i would still stick with PCGS for this one ( i fully realize they will label it GENUINE only without assignment of a grade, but if there is enough luster present on the coin that in hand it is a no brainer MS coin go PCGS)

the separation of PCGS from "the rest of the pack" when selling a high dollar coin is that great

If a "real" picture of the coin can be used to sell the coin then don't waste your money with another service and leave it in the plastic it is in. Otherwise, NCS.
