First one that I personally bought for myself would be a bunch of Generic slabbed Saints, common date 58/62 stuff that I snagged back when gold was cheap in 01/02. I wasn't really collecting back then, just realized that gold was cheap, these were about an ounce of gold, and were probably a safer bet than Krugerrands.

First one I owned was the one in the top row with Martha Washington on it. I still can't believe that it was this series that brought me back to coin collecting after 10+ years off. I'm sure not many can say that image

mine was an 1882 au 3 dollar princess i paid $1,500 for in 1984...twas my pride n joy too

then my ex and i won a 1848 2.5 q.e. in au too at club cal neva in reno for a jack pot...darn we're we surprized when they came up with that for a date...we figured it was to be a common dated but felt a lil sad as no "cal." above the eagle

i still wonder just what club cal neva has for giveaways on jackpots

    1906 D $5 in 1947 for $5 from the local savings bank.

Later in 1962 I got a 1907 $20 for 10 cents. The dime was an 1870 Newfoundland that I had paid 10 cents for. A fair swap then, a fantastic one for me today.

The only gold coin I've ever owned was a 1724-M French Gold Louis D'Or from the Le Chameau shipwreck and ex Ford. It was one of a few hundred examples recovered from the French supply ship which sank off Nova Scotia in 1725 en route to North America. When the ship was found in the 1960s, John Ford was consulted and assisted with the salvage and had his pick of the coins as payment.

My first gold was purchased back at the turn of the century.

It was a 1896 double eagle that caught my eye with its uncirculated look.

I later found this place and learned about original coins.
The good news is that the rise in bullion value enabled me to come out ahead on this one.

Did you ever get this coin authenticated? This particular coin has been very heavily counterfeited by the omega man counterfeiter. He put a small greek letter omega in the upper loop of the R in LIBERTY on the obverse.

Back in 1965, I bought a nice 1927 Saint for $47. Later sold it and some other gold to buy a car. Wish I still had it.

First one I owned was not even a coin, per se. The 1984 1/2-ounce American Arts Gold Medallion, with John Steinbeck. After 25 years, the 2009 Red Book finally recognized this series and listed it in their book, only to yank it back out in the 2010 Red Book.

1974, went to the local bricks and motar shop and drooled over a 1924 $20 gold St. Gaudens. Talked the owner into lay-away for the coin (it was $125 at the time), put down my hard earned $40 and made payments for about 6 months when I was finally able to buy it. Kept it raw until 2006 when I sent it to PCGS where it graded MS65.
