Coin Counters
I took your "alternative to banks" statement to mean that you didn't want to deposit with a teller, but didn't mind going to a bank to use their coin counter.

edited to add: My bank gives me free coin wrappers for all the coins including
president dollars.
<< <i>If I remember right, Coinstar charged 8 1/2% unless you took payment as an e-card (for Amazon, for example), then it was free. Is that no longer true? >>
Not sure about the percentage of the fee for using the machine, but yes there isn't any free CoinStars that I know of unless you get your payment as an e-card. Most banks have their own coin counters I believe, and will let you use them free of charge if you have an account. My old bank used to just charge a two dollar fee regardless of how much change I had (they stopped the fee once they realized I was a member of that bank - I never said anything I figured "it is what it is".)

try the links above to find some free banks.
perhaps the idea is the same as I have been having.... keep them from circulating back to stuffed coin vaults so the banks keep ordering new coin.
try to find a bank that is free and uses a different armored car company than your regular bank.

As mentioned, get a gift card rather than cash.
Direct Coin Deposit- a service that your bank has to sign up for and it's frr IF your bank doesn't charge you a fee.
Recently I ran 1,300 cents through CoinStar fee free to put on a Starbucks card, but due to technical problems it gave me a receipt for cash, fee free.

<< <i>Why do you need an alternative to banks? >>
.........i don't like to 'irritate' them with these tokens. they get them for me and call when the latest come in, but i'd be willing to bet they'd RATHER i didn't bring 'em back.
<< <i>...........you guys got it made in calif. i'm from pa.
Yeah, but they pay for it in cost of living and taxes.
<< <i>Why not just spend them. Afterall, they're money, and spending them is what the government is trying to get people to do.

...........i do, ray, but i got lots, and people give me the 'stink-eye' when i spend them.

Take them to another branch. Wells Fargo has burned their bridges with me so I'm switching banks but I keep the WF account for returning searched change. --jer
Take them to another branch.
..........yeah, i can do that but i don't have accounts at all the others...............I KNOW WHAT I'LL DO!!!!! I'll JUST SPREAD MY WEALTH AROUND! then i'll be allowed to turn them in to the others. and i'l be politically correct to boot!
It'll either give you a different buck or 4 quarters.
LOL.... I fed a few rolls to the machines at work over a month and spent the quarters each day to avoid a few stink eyes from cashiers wondering where to put the dollar coins.

Bummer!!! Closest one is about 90 miles away in Riverside... still might beat Coinstar fees if I have enough coins to process

I would just put that with the change I picked up off the street away, and let it accumulate, and eventually use it for a new coin, or a vacation, or some other extra treat. Though, mostly, it wound up having to go to a car repair, as usually, when I had a good enough sum to get a decent coin, or something else, all my cars have had a tendency to decide they need extensive/expensive repairs at the last second...like on my way to the local B&M, or on the road for a little getaway, or......you get the picture.

how about stores with self-serve check outs. A few stores in my area have this feature like Super Walmart, BJ's Wholesale and Home Depot.
I've dumped hundreds & thousands of dollar coins thru these places and no one has ever complained.
Stores like this may solve your dilemma so one has to give you the stink eye

When they bought Commerce, this was one of the things they retained.

Agreed. I've paid as much as $30 or $40 at a time with half dollars and dollar coins at my supermarket self-checkout
I have to coordinate a trip like that though, because otherwise my pocket wouldn't hold all that coin!

<< <i>Did I miss a whole year and it's April Fool's day again? J/K, no offense to the OP. I thought everyone knew there chunk is like 8.9% (not sure if it's the same rate in every machine in every city). >>
That may be their fee, but some financial institutions will subsidize it for some/all of their members. As I mentioned, any member of my CU in California can use the machine for no more than 5%, but if you have more than $5,000 in savings/loan balances or you're under 18, they don't charge you anything.
I'm sure Coinstar isn't being charitable here, but in any event the 8.9% isn't always charged to the end user. Maybe the financial institution subsidizes it, or in the case of getting the gift cards, the retailer subsidizes it.
<< <i>For prez bucks I'd spend them or roll them. I only use the Coinstar for cents, because it's not worth my time to count and roll 1000 coins for a $10 bill. >>
Makes sense.
If you had a 100 count pack of single dollar bills, would you just spend them as need be or try to turn them in for larger denomination bills?
<< <i>Why don't you just put them into circulation yourself? >>
.........i do, Gareth, but it's a grind sometime to absorb the 'look' from cashiers and such.
<< <i>Did I miss a whole year and it's April Fool's day again? J/K, no offense to the OP. I thought everyone knew there chunk is like 8.9% (not sure if it's the same rate in every machine in every city). I am 99% positive I recently overheard a guy b*tching about CoinStar's 'fee'(well, it was more like you couldn't NOT hear his rather loud rant). I could stand to be corrected, but they are famous for their 'fee'. Though, each time I pass one, there's always something in tha reject bin. Yeah, I stoop that low....lol...and when they had public pay-phones (remember way back when they had those?), yeah, I checked those too!!! lol Though, more times than not I'd wind up with a little extra sha-shing in my pocket.

Do you really consider 8.9% a "small fee"? I sure don't which is why I spend my change as I get it rather than save it to later feed a coinstar machine.
