While browsing the "What If" scenario's in my PCGS Set Registry, I came across this:

What the Heck is a "First Day of Mintage" coin?? It can;t be the First Day Coin Covers as I've had a bunch of those graded in the Monroe Series yet that designation doesn;t show up there.

BTW, this only appears on the Washington and Adams Presidential Dollar coins and the populations are way low.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It's the 1ST Day Covers.......they are the first day of "Mintage" coins, I had a bunch of GW's done across the street, people confuse them with the First Day of Issue.

With all the sub categories of these Presidential dollars,by the time all of these are issued, it would be less of a task to assemble a world coins type set.

While I normally might agree with you, I've done Bulk First Day Coin cover submissions for Monroe and Madison Dollars and none of those 100 coins are listed as "First Day of Mintage". And from PCGS's own Web Page: (Dated 4-19-2007)

    3. U.S. Mint Official American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. These are First Day of Issue Covers sold by the U.S. Mint, each containing two coins (one from Philadelphia, one from Denver), both from the first day of production. The holder is stamped and postmarked on the official first day of issue (see below). Coins will be removed from the holder and graded separately. The original shipping boxes need not be sealed, but the covers must be submitted intact and unopened. A minimum of 50 covers may be submitted through the Bulk Submissions program. PCGS is currently developing an option for encapsulating the entire cover. PCGS does not offer a First Day of Mintage (or Production) option.

Now how many readers want to guess why PCGS doesn't offer First Day of Mintage option??
  • Russ will be happy to see it on there since he bought a weak edge coin in a first day of mintage cover graded by NGC as a 65. It belonged to a friend of mine. Hopefully he will get the first graded as weak edge and first day of mintage in a PCGS slab soon. I think it was a Denver coin also.
