Graded Fraudulent T206 Overprint Scheme Busted

A long involved story, but basically someone forged T206 overprints, had them graded, sold and traded them, and even was able to get one into a major auction.

Fortunately the expert collectors were able to crack the fraud and turn things around.

The fraud perpetrator has tried to explain in another thread on the same board. He is getting no quarter, and deserves it. This guy had been masquerading as a collector and using an alt to promote his website. His alibi? The hobby made me do it. I was consumed by the T206 aura.

An interesting story.

Very good and funny read .

Its so sad that between money and power , its the primary motivation for alot of people . In and by themselves neither money or power are bad , as in our families and in our communities , we need some of each , to make things work . Its the abuse of power or money , which are on the forefront of alot of news lately , which disturb most , unless somehow you are a benifactor .

    Thanks for the thread---- Sonny

that many amateur T206 collectors took as gospel from a trusted source T206musuem.com......"

Well, glad to see that at least both grading companies
fell for it. PSA would NEVER have heard the end of it if
SGC had not liked the cards too.

    Glad they caught this POS.

I hadn't been over to net54 in quite some time. I almost can't believe they are now allowing discussion of post WW2 cards? Now I've seen everything. LOL

One day they might actually talk about a card of a player I have seen play.

Steve not sure what you mean? Post war cards are not supposed to be discussed on the vintage forum.

They do though, have a forum for post war cards, they have had that for a couple of years now.

    Steve

    Good for you.

I know I haven't posted there in at least a few years. Appears as though they are now using a new forum format. The few times I lurked there over the past few years was when someone here posted a link to a thread there...and upon quick glance I didn't notice any post WW2 threads, but I'll take your word for it because I know you post over there sometimes.

It's about time they did that - when Leon took over, I was one of the few who stated, because Leon asked...that post WW2 cards should be discussed, as a good number of the members there collect post war cards, but Leon decided not to do it, and it's one reason i lost interest. I initially joined there when I started getting interested in T206's but my interest waned as my primary focus has always been 50's, 60's and 70's Topps. T206's are certainly cool, but the dam things are so dam expensive, and when I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket, I'd rather invest in upgrading my 50's and 60's cards.

No wonder everyone this last month was asking to see the (color) scans Ive had for many years of some OM overprints (not my cards). I need to get online more often and read a bit. This is the first Ive seen of this I didnt look too long at Net54 today yet..

Thanks for the heads up. What a story image

OM overprints were really red ink SC overprints (somone at the printers was goofing around or was using a scrapsheet to practice).
Most pictures of the backs that collectors see are from the Lipset Encyclopedia and its printed in B&W so many didnt know that the overprint is red ink (shows up as black in the B&W photos)

The guy at T206museum.com should have done more research and known that they are red and not black... what a fool, ruined his whole career

IMO Both of these overprints are not intentionally done and SHOULD NOT be considered a back "type" (but thats another story)
