who has built a buffalo nickel grading set?

I've got several Buffalo nickels in MS65 and MS66 and a few in Fine and XF. Figure I might as well build a Fine thru mint state grading set.

What would be some good parameters to set up?

Problems arise when I consider quality of strike, years, and mints.

Should I stick to strong strike examples? Include weakly struck examples?

Does ANACS, NGC or PCGS grade that much differently?

I want to liimit the set to no more than twenty.

I thought about doing this also. To keep it cheap I would go with either the 1913 type 1 or the 1938-D.
Whatever you decide on I would stick to only one year .

If you stick with the years above, most of these coins can be found well struck.

All three of those are good companies IMHO, but even within any one TPG there will be differences.
I think they all do a good job with the common dates, its when you get into the 20's coins ,branch mint and around the vf range.
If I did a set I would stick with one TPG.

It's my belief this is nearly impossible with Buffalo nickels except in the lower circulated grades. Each date/mm has such unique characteristics in regards to strike, color, planchet quality, etc. What constitutes MS63/64 for a 1926-D would grade AU50/MS60 for a 1938-D.

Would need to stick to one date/mintmark for all of the grades, as the others have suggested. Would also be wise to search the pop reports first before deciding on a date/mintmark combo as many may not currently exist in certain grades. Basically you will likely need to pick a popular date or a semi-key date that is worth slabbing at the lower grades, otherwise you'll have to make many of your own by sending raw coins to PCGS and that can get very expensive if you're trying for a specific grade.

Good luck!! I've had fun with my grading set so far! image
