Has anyone ever bought one of the NNC slabs from centsles?

One of my first internet purchases was a MS64RD Lincoln in a MS66RD NNC slab.

If I am not mistaken the guy who runs this outfit won one of the PCGS grading competitions. He knows how PCGS grades and then added two points.

I have bought a few from him and imo they are 2 - 3 points overgraded. But I never bought any lower MS graded coins from him - only high grade ms coins that still turned out to be fairly nice.

He has bought a fair amount off Ebay from me over the years, mostly ANACS "problem" coins. I shudder to think what they "became" in NNC holders.

I once was outbid by centsles on an early 19th gold piece, in an ANACS holder marked, AU, scratched. There was still some dirt in the devices and and a light scratch on the cheek. A few weeks later it reappeared in an NNC holder on the centsles store, graded MS-63. The dirt was gone and the scratch looked a lot fainter. Sold for less than he paid for it originally, though.

I bought a Capped Bust Half that looked like a "No Problems" coin in a NNC slab graded XF-45. Since it was a tough to find redbook variety I sent it to PCGS and it graded VF-35. In my opinion I thought it was a lock for XF-40.

Got one CBH from them - "MS63".
Cracked it out and never resubmitted it. My guess is it would grade about AU55, which is about the kind of money
I paid for it - so not that bad. Nice details, not a lot of wear - maybe questionable toning these days.
Whoops, I just checked my notes and it was an NTC ?? not NNC.

I have one somewhere with a 1921-D Vam morgan that is in one of those slabs. I didn't buy it for the grade, I bought it because it is one of the better VAMs for that date and nobody else bid on it, probably because it was in the NNC slab. I got it for less than a raw non-Vam would have went for.

NTC is another company. They are talking about NNC National Numismatic Certification and I have bought several coins from them that only graded 1 point less at PCGS.

Back around 2004, when I made my price guide for Jeffersons, I noticed the disparity between prices for PCGS coins in relation to the other grading services. At that time, there were few NNC coins that sold, but the ones that did, were usually in the ballpark of 1/20th the price of a PCGS coin with the same grade. There were always those who bought them though. There were many people on these boards at the time relating very similar experiences with potential grades from NNC as you see today in this thread.

I no longer spend 500+ hours a year looking at prices across the board for coins in a particular grade and have selectively reduced the coins I watch to the top 3 - 4 grading companies, so I couldn't tell you if any of the NNC coins still sell, but Caveat Emptor.

On another note... I thought it was also interesting many of the top grade non-fs coins in the PCGS Price Guide in 2004 had prices of less than $50 (including the 1967 non-SMS which, in 2004, was listed for $10 in MS66 in the PCGS price guide) and some of the FS coins had absolutely no price listed (like the 76-D in MS66FS). Overnight many of those prices became very similar to the ones I had listed in the guide... but I digress.

I bought a NNC 1912 proof v-nickel from him a few years ago. At the time i could not find a proof 1912 v-nickel in 65 or lower. I searched for months and finally bought the first one i saw. It was in a NNC proof 63 holder. I won it for about 190 dollars. I cracked it out and sent it to NGC. It came back in a NGC proof 64 holder. ( i joined and had 8 free submissions that had to be used up) I am sure this was a rare happening. Shortly after i won the 1912 proof it seemed like every day another 1912 proof showed up every day for months and months.

I have 14S buff nickel in an NNC AU58 holder that I bought from a dealer in OH right after they started grading coins. That coin will at least 55 in anyone's holder. That said, far and away nearly everything I've seen since then in NNC holders appears grossly overgraded/or has other problems.
RE: Centsless, the only coin I ever bought from him was a 20S walker in a PCI gold MS63 holder, via an Ebay winning. Paid less than 60 GS Bid for it. It's a legit mint state coin, probably MS60 or 61.

Moral of the story - It's Ok to buy coins in lower tier holders, or coins from lower tier dealers, just be very careful and selective.

Have bought only "one" NNC slabbed coin. But, it was NOT from "centsles".

Saw an NNC 1921 Walker in a VF25 holder---dark and looked original patina. In fact, I kept telling myself that it was an XF coin.

Paid good VF money for that coin. Got it---jumped for joy. It was indeed an XF coin and "totally original patina".

Cracked it out---sent it to NGC---came back an XF40. To this day, it sits in my Registry set. And, to this day, I have NEVER seen another NNC graded coin that I thought was graded anywhere near correctly. Just a fluke I guess. Bob [supertooth]

I bought a 20 cent piece which had deep corrosion and AT. Centsless took it back without any problem.

Back a few moons ago I hit a B&M and saw 5 Morgans in the case, all graded 65, all common dates, asked the dealer what he was asking for them, he pulls em out for me to look at and tells me that no way in hell are they 65's and he is willing to sell them to me at AU pricing for the date- he pulls the sheet, sez to me - 19 bucks each.- Yep bought em, took em home, cracked em like any good collector would and put those nice 63's in a bottle of ms70 to remove some crap, and whalla- off to the wayte raymond they go.

I haven't looked at them for 4 years now, along with a few other WR page filled coins they sit in my little fire proof safe in the attic, no need to look at them yet, the attic is not warm enough.

I bought an unbeliavble 1936 brillant proof that I took a chance on for around $150 in a NNC holder. It was ugly, and BLUE! Graded PR 63. PCGS said it was PR 62 and I sold it for $300.

It's a fact. eBay will let us know what a coin is worth. NNC has an agenda, just like the rest of them. Market making is moving and shaking. Profit taking is shaking and moving.
