NON-HOFers and Collector Value

What former major league sports players (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL) do you think will maintain collector value in the future that are not currently/will not likely be elected to the Hall-of-Fame? Mattingly, Rose, Bo Jackson, come to mind--what do you think?

Yes, "Bill"--I posted this question at FeeBay, but not much of a response just yet. Before you hate on me "Bill," I would personally like to place my '65 Ron Herbel NM 7 on YOU, yes your "Bill", to beat Shaq in a FT contest...

(P.S. Somebody asked about PSA grading oversized items? So they will grade by jock strap after I win "best seller" on eBay??)

    Joe Jackson
    Thurman Munson
Elmer Layden, Harry Stuhledreher, Don Miller, Jim Crowley (4 Horsemen of Notre Dame, very popular autographs)
    Knute Rockne
    Pete Rose

I think the above names are a few that will stand the test of time. I don't really consider Bo Jackson, Don Mattingly, etc, to be in that same league.

What's Munson's deal? Didn't grow up in that era. I know his '71 Topps RC holds value. Was he just a very good Yankee Catcher for a few years? No chance he will make the HOF? "Bill"--Go work on your FT's instead of replying to this thread--remember I have $ on you over Shaq...

Munson had his career and his life cut short when he crashed his plane in 1979 in an accident and killed himself. According to wikipedia, he was 7x All-Star selection (1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978),
2x World Series champion (1977, 1978), 3x Gold Glove Award winner (1973, 1974, 1975), 1976 AL MVP , and 1970 AL Rookie of the Year.

The Yankees retired his number 15. I don't know if he played the requisite number of years to be even considered for HOF eligibility. Is a very popular Yankee world series champion as opposed to just a popular Yankee (Mattingly). His autograph is highly valued and has a couple condition sensitive early cards. Very collectible and no longer alive to do anything to diminish his popularity.

Bill--I have no problem with your collector interests, in fact, I have many of the same obsessions (although not necessarily with graded cards). I can understand/respect that. And I don't mind you calling me out from time to time if I'm on the wrong side of the issue.

But you need to get over your notion that I'm a bad/unethical dude, etc. Yes, at times I might cross the line, and if collectors need to remind me of that fact, I will change my position. For example, I recently posited the idea of TTW requests for resale. As a result of this conversation w/collectors, I will not be pursuing that avenue.

You have the fortune of renting out trailer homes (or whatever you do), but right now I do not. Occasionally my questions will go beyond that of a pure collector to that of asking about how to make $ in this hobby. That does not make me a "dirt bag".

Being a collector and a seller are not mutually exclusive interests. In fact, at my first and only show, half of my sales went to "sellers." Likewise, most antique car sellers are also collectors...

Yes, I am obnoxious at times (sometimes drunk) and hold different positions on various issues (ex: PWE's), but you are barking up the wrong tree. Go after some guy that has a 91.0% feedback and re-wraps cello packs or whatever.

Better yet, try to win argument with your wife for once. After all, she will be putting your cards aka "EX-HUSBANDS" card lot up for sale. BTW--when that happens let me know, I will want to put a bid in... image

I've been pretty busy so I haven't been paying attention to the boards, other than my own threads for the most part, but this mintacular must have done something to someone to have these types of responses to his threads. I thought it was a decent question and have been responding as such but I evidently missed something. Can someone fill me in via PM? If not, I'll spend a little time researching on the board to see what happened.

Here's an update: "Bill" told people on this board to "not be fooled by the new people". "Bill" misrepresented/lied about who I am/positions I have took in order to make everyone hate me right off the bat.

"Bill" has accused me of being unethical/scammer/lacking morality despite my 100% feedback (will be corrected tomorrow) b/c he doesn't like my positions on certain issues.

In short, "Bill" is a hater and unwelcoming person. That's pretty much the gist of it image P.S. I offered "Bill" a NM Ron Herbel NM 7 (PSA 7!) card to bury the hatchet and he never responded not to mention that I am willing to bet my collection on "Bill" to beat Shaq in a FT competition...

OH well, you try to have a genuine conversation and then I guy like "BILL" ruins it and comes along and tells you to watch out for someone like me. Yes, I will smack you in the mouth if you attack me, but you will NEVER see me (unlike "BILL") go out of my way to distort/misrepresent you to other people, like "BILL".

The real TROLL on this board is BILL. I have genuine questions about this hobby and each time I try to raise them "BILL" upends me and attacks my morality, etc. like he does on eBay. I am not afraid of you "BILL" so if you think you can scare me off with your BS I will survive.

Let me elaborate. After Barry Bonds futile attempt to throw out Sid Bream at home in '92, all PGH students (myself included) were forced into a film room a la Clockwork Orange to watch Mazs 1960-61 game-winning HR against the Yanks with full knowledge the Pirates would NEVER make it back to the World Series again.

How wrong they were! Heard of Freddy Sanchez? Bet you have...

Let's see, uses PWEs to ship but can't understand why a buyer would be upset but yet complained about receiving a card in a PWE. Not only thinks it is OK to search for "Hot Packs" but promotes the practice and the sellers on eBay that sell them. Wants to profit from TTMs with no collector interest at all, just for pure profit. Claims to have no clue about collecting or selling and starts endless threads about eBay and selling but has been an eBay member for about 9 years and a seller for at least 3 years. Claims to have no knowledge of retired/deceased non-Pirates players but only sells vintage cards. Is a sexist pig that doesn't think women are capable of selling cards or even being a collector (thread went poof). Showed his/her maturity by posting a Mike Hunt and Heywood Jablowmi thread (another poofed thread). There's plenty more but I'm going to play golf.
