Looks like NGC is taking the lead...

This looks like the next step in coin slabbing, So when is PCGS going to adopt this?

Soon. I think it's a matter of survival for the slabbers. Now that the counterfeiters have started making very deceptive fakes and fairly deceptive slabs, it's not enough to know the coin is slabbed or even to know the cert numbers any more. Now we need to know what the genuine coin with that cert number looks like.

Failure to address that reduces the value of their product and consumer confidence in it.

It says they take FREE pics of the coin and when someone tries to verify it on NGC's web site it show the pics of the coin for FREE! Did I mention FREE!

<< <i>So what does the article say for those of us who do not subscribe? >>

I don't subscribe to NN, but I can read it.

It says NGC is going to start displaying images whenever possible in a cert lookup so people can see what the genuine coin looked like when it was encapsulated by NGC. Now that the counterfeiters have caught on to mining valid cert numbers to put their fakes in, this is the next logical progression.

I really do think they should follow PCGS and make the cert lookup available to everyone. I think that would increase the marketability of their coins if people who weren't Collectors Society members could look something up as well.

Its an additional $40 here and I believe all the coins in the order have to be imaged as well. (could be wrong)

At PCGS, you get hi-res TrueViews... at NGC, you get a low-res shot of the slab for identification. The comparison of the photos you get at either service is apples and oranges.

you can't be seriuos? how can you compare the free images that NGC takes for identification of the real coin/slab from a possible counterfeit and doesn't add to the grading turnaround time, to the fact that PCGS still has their head in the sand on this; except of course for the overpriced $20 TrueView that slows down turnaround time and very few opt for.

A free collector friendly approach to the problem versus the same head in the same approach from the other service. hmmmm.......

I tried it on a recent purchase, it's in a newer slab but not the pronged ones,
    and there was the picture
it was possible to identify the coin but it was
not a high quality picture I would use.

I think the concept is a great idea and shows that they are treating the problem of counterfeit slabs etc. seriously and head on. However, like anything in the wonderful world of coins and shady characters who want to scheme others the counterfeiters and coin doctors will eventually and surely come up with more ways to beat the system. A never ending game of cat and mouse...sounds like fun to watch and read about...until your the one who gets scammed!

NGC copied this from DGS grading service owned by DLRC. PCGS will eventually follow as they won't have any choice.

This does nothing for coins graded prior to October 2008 nor does it offer anything for the non-NGC Collectors Club Member.

And yes its a good idea but a very expensive idea.

PCGS really needs to follow their lead. They are so close by including TrueView images with cert info. Now they just need some kind of generic photo station for folks that don't pay for Trueview Images.

Why would anyone pay to join the NGC Collector's Society when they can submit through the ANA? I must admit, since NGC closed me out from seeing their POP reports, I have steered away from NGC coins just a little.

For what PCGS charges, they should be able to provide this security photo service free even for reholders. JMHO

    PawPaul,

Your ignorance knows no boundaries, so let me fill you in.......

First, NGC not only holders more coins, but has the rarest coins in the world in their holders. While PCGS only enjoys a roughly 60/40 advantage over NGC on rare six figure and seven coins, NGC has virtually a complete monopoly on everything else; having over 90% of the six and seven figure coins in their holders. These are countries that I collect from, thus NGC is the logical choice for anything over say $5k, where PCGS has virtually little respect and little in their holders. At a time when US coin submissions are down 20% according to CU's own earnings conference calls, they have little diversification and respect outside of the niche of US coins.

Second, PCGS has been trying frantically to court the Chinese market for third party grading, sending their top brass over there, and even releasing a PCGS holder printed in Mandarin Chinese. Then, when the fake PCGS holder problem broke out, they left the major Chinese auction houses and dealers holding the bag and urged collector not to buy slabs from there. Hmmmm......a one way market huh, brillant! why not throw the baby out with the bath water?

Third, PCGS and it's sister company have been hemmorging money and stock price for quite a while now, and this has led to the CU sale of some of it's business units to avoid the collaspe of the company.

So, in light of the fact they lag far behind NGC in most everything but a percentage of US coins, abandon markets they dump money and time into, and the mass exodus of shareholders away from their stock, they NEED to look like they are doing something to remain a viable company with future looking plans in the face of counterfeiting.

So far, they have shown little leadership aside from a 'head in the sand' approach.

I didn't say that NGC's idea was bad--I like it. I do think the idea that you can compare the free NGC pictures to the PCGS TrueViews is ridiculous. They serve different purposes, and that's obvious. The pictures NGC takes are good for ID'ing your coin; the TrueViews are good for selling the coin.

it is not that I put them above them, but the market does in many instances. PCGS is well respected with US coins, but is well behind NGC in respectability in everything else according to auction results and what coins are in each respective company's holders. Go back and read again what i wrote Dimeman, before you say that I "loose" anything.

You should really put your money where your mouth is, and buy some CLCT stock. You do realize it has tanked, and supporting the company by posting on a forum that is read by less than 1% of the coin collecting public, is doing them no good. Doggie - I hate to break the news to ya, but ALL stock has tanked. I'm just talking about grading. I find it hard to believe NGC is so good at grading the world coins or whatever you are talking about and can't grade US coins for crap! Sure you can find some nice coins in NGC holders, but most are pukie coins that can't get into a PCGS holder.

    Dimeman,
I buy coins, then submit them to PCGS. Then I put them on ebay and sell them. Then I look at my bank account to make sure it has more than when I started .
