I forgot where i hid some of my coins

I must be getting old. A few weeks back before we went on a short family vacation i put a lot of my coins in my safety deposit box. The day we were leaving i forgot about some coins. I generally have a few spots in the house i put stuff if i want to hide it for a few days. I did not use those spots this time because i thought of a new great one. The only problem is i forgot where the spot is. It will come back to me in a few days but it bugs me. I hope i am not the only one that ever forgets. Last year my wife found my 1866 proof 3 cent silver proof and a ms unc roll of 1909 vdb's and a few other proof liberty v-nickels in a hiding spot i completely forgot about. Do you ever temporary forget where you hide stuff?

Yes. I think all of us do.

    Missing coins drive collectors crazy.

I always tell myself, OK, I’m going to put this right here so I don’t forget where I put this.

So far I’ve lost the keys to the tool box and to the shed where said tool box is still sitting, A Penn fishing reel, still in box that I got for Christmas…now it’s time to go and I can’t find where I put the danged thing.

I could go on, but you get the general idea what’s going on. No wonder the armed services don’t want elderly on the front line. It would go something like this…

Marvin….MARVIN! “Huh?” Where are the bullets? You were supposed to bring the dang nab bullets Marvin, now where are they? I wasn’t supposed to bring the bullets, that was Jimmy’s job! My job was to bring the ah…ah…awe darn, now I forgot what I was supposed to bring, see what you did? Where’s Jimmy? Anybody seen Jimmy? Saw him at the range getting flares. ~shaking head~ FLARES! We need to shoot one of those flares up to see if there’s any bullets up there.

    This man’s Army is kaput!

    RETREAT!

    No, the other way!

I'll come up with something, eventually.

Ya know, this isn't a bad idea.

On 2nd though .... I've BEEN wanting to buy a metal detector for quite some time!

I think now would be a great time to buy a nice one. image

Yeah - it DOES drive me crazy when I can't find a particular coin that I KNOW I have -

    regardless of cost or Value.

Yeah, what a drag it is getting old.

You'll either remember where they are or stumble upon them eventually. As long as they aren't in a position of being inadvertantly discarded (like hidden in the freezer among frostburned meat), you'll be ok.

My best hiding spot was PCGS. I looked frantically for weeks for an extremely valuable coin, rifling through all the safe deposit boxes and upturning the whole house. Then I found it in the mail at the post office box in a new holder. I am surely not the only person who sent in an important coin for grading, crossover or reholdering (or truview) and forgot they did so.

I somehow misplaced my start of an MS Franklin collection. I thought it somehow went to the dump. I replaced them and finished the MS collection only to find the missing Frankies. How stupid!

My grandpa hid coins all over his place and wouldn't tell anyone about where they were. I bought what we could find of his collection off of my grandma when he passed away. She would occasionally find a few more of his coins, and I'd buy those as well. Earlier this year, she passed away too, and their house is now being sold. Our family searched it pretty well, and could not find anything else. I'm just afraid that we may be losing part of his collection along with the house when it sells!

The moral is, hiding places are great, but they may need to be documented or shared with at least one other person.

When I was in high school I found a KeenKutter hatchet behind a beam in a hayloft that had "Don't Loose" in red paint on it. I'm sure that some of my well placed coins should have that printed on them too.

I really hate it when I put something someplace where I promise myself I won't forget that it is there and then go ahead and forget. I have always had a so so memory though and am sort of used to it. But when I do find things that I have hidden for safekeeping it is always a relief!

Dang, and here I though I was unique.

I had picked up a few ounces of assorted gold coins, and I knew that I had locked them in a desk drawer temporarily before a trip to the SDB.

Tore my office apart looking for them when I couldn't find them several weeks later when they finally came to mind.

Eventually, after almost giving up, I opened an old PCGS green box, where I keep a few low-cost widgets for show n' tell. There they were, just where I put them.

    Oy.

I used to do that... put them in places to hide. Then I realized, I didn't know where half of my stuff was. Almost everytime I looked for a particular coins, it was nowhere to be found. Then, it would miraculously show up a week, month, or even a year later.

Now, they all end up in the safety deposit box.

I located some of the coins today after a hour long treasure hunt. I found some silver quarters that i totally forgot about. I did not figure i was all alone in the "I forgot where i put".

I also found a missing DVD that i accused my son of loaning out to his friends about 10 years ago. LOL

I recently found a 2007 $50 American Buffalo PCGS PR70DCAM sitting next to my pen holder behind a bunch of papers. I had no idea I even still had the coin as I took it out of my PCGS registry when I did an inventory of my coins. I don't know how long it had been there either... I was sure glad I found it. As for hiding coins, if you have to hide them, maybe it's time to invest in a home safe or something a little more helpful in a pinch.

True...100% of the time it is true, why? Because when you're looking for something and find it the search ends, therefor, by default, it was in the "last place you looked"

....unless you have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and continue looking for something you already found

Call me strange, i do have a safe and it weighs about 700 pounds. I leave the doors open on it when we leave town. All the goods go to the bank or get hidden in different spots through the house, garage, attic, cars, barn, RV etc. They may find some but not all.

Why do i leave the safe wide open? Well it is upstairs and since it only weighs around 700 pounds i can just picture a few thieves trying to push it down the stairs or over the railing onto the first floor. It was such a pain to get it upstairs that if i ever sell this house i will not take the safe with me.
