2 Morgans from same dies?

JJMJJM Posts: 8,129 ✭✭✭✭✭
what would be the odds of this?

i am 99.9% certain that i have 2 1887's from the same dies,....there are many perimeter cracks
on both sides and they all match. 1 is a Battlecreek and one is reg NGC

mintage at 20,290,000 - how many dies do you think were used ? is there a record somewhere?

the cracks are so close in strike that i also think they were struck relatively
close to eachother prior to anymore degrading of dies

hopefully i will be able to get some closeup pics at some point

It's easy......I have several series that are from the same dies.
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

They didn't exactly change the die pairings after each strike.

    JJM:

Die pairings are the basis for VAM numbers. Some die pairings will last for thousands, even tens of thousands of coins. Some last for much fewer. Die cracks, along with other features, can be used as markers to identify die pairs, and thus VAM numbers. Essentially, those of us who collect Morgan and Peace Dollar VAMs do to every coin we see what you did with those two Morgans; examine them closely...but we take it several steps further. We will try then to match the cracks and other markers to known die pairings. Its actually a fun way to collect Morgans and a great way to continue expanding your collection when you hit the brick wall coins like the 93S, 89CC or 94P... you can cherry pick varieties, including very valuable ones, from dealer junk buckets for a little over melt. It can be allot of fun.

May I suggest the following reading:
