When was your first PCGS submission and how were your results?

robecrobec Posts: 6,670 ✭✭✭✭✭
In 2003 I submitted 5 CC Morgan's and 3 CC assorted gold. The result were 3 of the 5 Morgan's bb'd due to cleaning and the 3 gold slabbing with grades in the 53-58 range. A little disappointing but quite a learning experience.

    In 2005 I submitted 8 coins, 3 cc Morgans: '78 MS62PL, '83 MS65, '84 MS63,
    One fake 1909-s Indian Cent
1829 and 1835 half cents: cleaned
    1908-s Indian Cent: cleaned
    1932-D Washington: XF45

Yep, I know Morgans best and that proved it!

Back, after PCGS just opened their doors I put together a small submission of ten or so GEM 1964 Kennedy halves I'd been saving. Nicely and originally toned little beauties. Now, of course, back then you had to find a Dealer to submit your coins through and the closest was a shop located in La Jolla (still there, by the way).

When I approached the PCGS authorized dealer with my mini-hoard he, at first, refused to allow me to send them in. He didn't understand the logic of spending $30. per coin (PCGS didn't really offer too many various tiers back then!) and it took some pleading on my part for him to do so.
They came back, many, many weeks later, one making MS66 with most MS65 and one or two MS64's.

It was a fun and interesting time back then as really Teletrade was kind of the market maker for these earlier slabs, so to speak.

I just submitted my first coin a couple of weeks a go. A Ultra High Relief Double Eagle and it came back as First Strike MS70. Not bad for a first timer

I joined the CC in Jan. of 2003 and got the 8 free gradings. At the time, PCGS gave you two vouchers for four coins each and they didn't have to be submitted at the same time.

Here's my 1st submission.....these were all purchased raw on eBay.

And, my 2nd submission.....these were all pulled from a partial set that I bought from my local dealer. The 1914 more than made up for the cost of the set.

In the '90s I tried to cross some cameo proof Jeffersons from NGC, all were denied. My 2nd submission was an attempt to cross some NGC full step Jeffs all of which did indeed cross. They all had 6 full steps. I wish I had bought up every NGC MS 67 FS Jeff on the market then and kept them until now. Another trade to add to my "IF" account, you know, the account where you keep track of all the "what IF I had done this or that trade?"

All common dates but I was generally pleased. I still can't figure out why the 1878 s was bagged for cleaning. I've shown it do dozens of collectors and dealers and they can't spot the cleaning either.

I went through divorce at the turn of the century and that brought me back to coin collecting through eBay. By 2004 I'd read this place a little bit, had a little too much confidence and then sent some of my first "raw" purchases in... just to see if my eyes were any good.

They aren't the best and I've since learned a couple of "numismatic" terms and hardly none of the proper etiquette (Sorry God)... But I still try.

    My first submission :

The first coin I ever sent in for grading was a 1942/1 Dime, and it graded VF30. Exactly what I thought it would. It's been about 3 years.

1987 , and I sent 7 or 8 of my best Mintstate colored Franklins........

each and every stinking one came back in a MS64 holder image

five of them today reside in PCGS MS66 holders.....

I remember D.Hall at a seminar saying , " Grading standards will not change..........."

My first PCGS submission was about a year and a half ago. Eight various coins on a voucher, four came back bagged as cleaned or altered. I've since gotten better, I've only collected for a couple of years now.

My first submission was on 12/8/2003 and was the 8 freebies for joining the Collectors Club at the Platinum Level.
At the time, the 8 could be split into two 4 coin submissions:

This was my very first post.

As you can see, not much has changed on the forums as, I was whining about the quality of the coins in the 2001 Kennedy Rolls from the Mint! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

    Submitted last December 2008.

All purchased raw...starting to slab regularly now to see how I have done.

    1877 Cent received a XF-45... I expected a XF-40. VERY HAPPY!!
1878-cc Morgan received a MS-63. I agree with grade but wanted a PL, guess I need to see more PL coins...
    1914-d Lincoln received a VF-30, a good grade but I thought it was a 35.
    1909-s Lincoln received a MS-64RD, exactly what I thought.
1909-s VDB Lincoln received a MS-64RB a point better than I thought. Extremely happy!
1937-d 3 Leg Buffalo received a AU-55...I thought it was a 58 for sure. This is the only coin I believe may have been graded 'tight'... but that's the way the ball bounces.

My very first submission was in 2005. I believe it was a 1914 Proof Barber dime. Purchased it off of Ebay, it came back PR62 cameo. I guess I was lucky it wasnt cleaned.
Honestly, I'll have to dig that coin out of the SDB sometime.

It would have been through a dealer- back in the old days, there were no direct submissions. I am not certain which coins were my first to PCGS- I think my first two coins were an 1881-cc Morgan that graded 65 and an 1830 Bust Half that graded 53... both coins were submitted about 15 years ago, if not longer

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

It's been almost exactly 2 years. All of it was untoned Modern crap.image Proof 69DCAMs of various dates and denominations. Also i'd cherrypicked a lot of 1986 Mint sets. Also went through thousands of BU red Cents from the 60's and 70's. Only a few came back as i expected and the others were 1 to 2 points lower than i had figured. i had this mindset that cherrypicking the modern crap for high grade stuff was easy but i was fed my humble pie that day. Sure there are lots of MS66RD Cents from the 1960's in PCGS plastic. But it took many, many bags and lots and lots of time as well as many different sets of good eyes to get them there and that experience really made me appreciate the true rarity of modern Gems, Superb Gems, etc. Because out of the thousands of early Lincoln Memorials i'd searched, not one came back MS66RD.
