Common but Fantastic IHC

I've seen some great pictures here. This is the nicest IndianHead I've see, personally- in hand. It's common, looks great- and I have 4 free grades coming from PCGS .

I'm trying not to think about a potential winfall here, even for a common coin, but %age wise...
I'm not responsible for the lack of bidding on this coin.

image I don't believe you are going to see the winfall you believe you are because the coin could very well BB with that spot and the cleaning but if you like the coin....that's all that matters image

I agree with what the others here have said.
Nice detail, but the surfaces look funky, as in
cleaned, plus that spot in the feathers is
    problematic.

Having said all of that, even if you do send it
in, and it does somehow grade, what kind of
grade are you looking for to be a "winfall" (sic.)?

Here is my 1903 IHC which is correctly graded
MS64RB by PCGS, and it's only worth a hundred
bucks, give or take. Not what I would call a
    windfall.

Unfortunately, the coin is cleaned and has a spot of corrosion. It's worth maybe $5.

If it's cleaned, how is the obverse 'red' and the reverse 'brown'?

For one, the lighting in both pics is very different. Both sides of the coin look clean to me.

Hello, RaginsteveK. Welcome to the boards.

As you are no doubt discovering, you will get excellent advice here, and brutally honest opinions. The message is clear about this IHC. Don't waste your time or money on it. I make coins like this one surprise bonuses to auction winners.

ah -hah ... glad it was cheap.

the scratches dont show up on the coin obverse. no marks wharever on the reverse.
it got "gaudy"/ overdone because the images i was viewing wheren't getting "bright enough" - until i was done. then it was suddenly REALLY BRILLIANT.

    I'm OK with brutally honest..

now that I think about a bit- this is infuriating-
    I've come close- a couple coins nearly good enought to be worth 15x what I paid. But that's like 2% of the problem;

a coin with magnificent detail- essentially worthless (cleaned or not, it is detailed and presumably MS from a wear standpoint; and cleaning aint gonna add detail)

tough to photograph- obv varying degrees of reddishness, depending upon light direction; reverse: degrees of red-brown, almost shimmering... depend upon light + direction...

"winfall" would have been MS{65+something} for RD/RB

actual coin is redder, brighter than OBV shown; reverse- more impressively RB, not so bright. ( 6400K lighting, but color variations still all over the place)

Why are you shooting through an airtite with scratches? Try it again, naked. And try to get the lighting the same on each side. I'd like to see better photos of the coin.

The dark spot on the obverse is probably fatal regardless. Even if there is no pitting/corrosion it kills the eye appeal.

Welcome, Steve. Don't worry, we have all had to learn one way or another. I learned the hard way how to grade Liberty nickels, and I'm still not all that accurate (according to PCGS). I have found that a good way to get a feel for what good, original coins should look like is to go to a GOOD auction site (Like David Lawrence - NOT Ebay...) and just browse through the PCGS and NGC graded coins.

    Take care!

this would be a good coin to practice with a bit. I'll get back to you. OBV is really red/gold ; reverse much more RB, less brilliant.

when I look at both sides, it's hard to believe it's one coin. attributed it to storage conditions.

took one set of photos- didnt like em. put it in airtight. shot more, as an afterthought. (bear in mind, i havent seen any scratching at this point)

RaginsteveK, I would recommend not buying another coin until you can determine originality over harshly cleaned. The coin you are showing is polished and not worth more than $10 and to sell it, well, it may not get any offers. Please ask a lot of questions here and when you feel like you have a better grasp of what a decent MS example is, then start buying again.

Don't buy from flea market sellers or "estate" sales.

same pics, different contrast/ brightness- and not nec all that accurate, in terms of what the eye sees. I'll play with it some more

(I have a RD cent out for grading. It took me 2 days to realize that daylight and incandescent were REALLY DIFFERENT! had never looked at it in daylight before)

it gets really wild when I rotate it around under the light sources.

I noticed that you are selling raw coins but listing grades in the titles....this is against Ebay rules. I don't care personally and would never report you but I would be careful in the future becuase Ebay is very fond of pulling auctions like this if someone get's their undies in a wad and decides to file a complaint. What the OP is doing is NOT against eBay rules. He's listing grades, not numbers. Per eBay: "A numeric grade is not included in the title of the listing, such as MS-65, VF-25, etc. A numeric grade may only be included in the description of the listing."

    Again, RaginsteveK, just friendly feedback...

You 1917 SLQ is harshly cleaned and it might be wise to say so. Here it is

Same for your '21-D WLH. FWIW.

Your seconds pics are much better.

Post more pics and you'll get good inputs from people with good insight that have already been through it.

If you send a group of flashy cleaned coins for grading you might not get much learning out of the grading cost. Try to send some with original skin (so you get some grades) and throw in one or 2 coins that look too good to be true so you verify what's cleaned and what's original.

back to the Indian Head- I have some new raw photos I haven't had a chance to work with-

if anyone can supply some specifics about more subtle cleaning, polishing (there are no scratches, 'cept one fine long one across her cheek) to build on the "if it looks to good to be true.

This coin has been stored, protected, for the last 50- something years. I don't know about the first fifty.

regarding the Walker '21-D, and the '17 SLQ-

Posted addendums ; added something specific later- basically, I could make a case for "organized scratches" across Liberty's legs (SLQ), especially in the higher-contrast photos.

With the Walker, again the higher contrast/ more toned photos: looks like streaky toning: cleaned 50 years ago and has been toning ever since?

Anyhow, that all that shows up to these virgin eyes.

I'll be out of touch most of today. Please PM me with any thoughts.

    Thanks in advance!

good idea- soon as I can. (actually most photos already taken could be used to close-ups via editing. would prefer that to f/32, 1/25th sec- for depth of field).

    RaginsteveK,
Here are a couple of pix from your '17 SLQ auction. My first reaction was "harshly cleaned" due to wipe lines across Liberty. I'm guessing this might be an older cleaning.

Grading (or BB'ing) from photos is not 100% reliable. If I were you I would take the coin to an expert I trust and get his opinion.

    Kudos for updating your auction!

    thanks, Lance

I picked up on some "systematic scratches" across Liberty's legs.

The tough one is the '21-D Walker: much more subtle, to me. I'm not totally convinced ( I don't see any scratches at all)
Ended the listing: couldn't risk taking the hit, or having someone ticked off.
