Aww rats, I might have lost my backup...

As a computer technician I preach all the time about having backups of your data. My coins are in a .mdb (Access) database that I created from scratch. I had it on my laptop and desktop. I also made a backup on CD before I moved two years ago. I am fairly newly (coming up on 3 years) married and we have a 10 month old little girl. When I got married I put everything in storage and now that Agibail has been born and we are settled in our new house I am getting back into the hobby once again.

I had to reformat my laptop and I can't find the file on my desktop. Not to worry, it is on my backup CD... err, where is it, I can't find it. So far it is not in the boxes I have pulled out of storage.

I really hope I find it, because all I have is a printed copy of my collection and I really don't wanna make a whole new database and input all that data again. I just thought I would post this story to remind everyone how important data backup is.

I still have a lot of stuff to go through, I hope the CD shows up, if not... "Do as I say, not as I do." is the phrase of the day.

For something like a coin data file, an online version is a reasonable idea. Attach and email the file to yourself or similar. USB hard drives are so-so cheap now ($99 for a terabyte), that is another option. Do both if a belt and suspenders type.

I bought a memory stick / USB drive at Target on a whim (impulse purchase at the check-out) for $4.99. Best purchase I made in a while. Keep it on my desk and back up my check register and Morgan Inventory everytime I think about it.

I had an 8gb memory stick that I used for nearly everything that I needed to travel with me, including a partial inventory of my collection... Dumb thing to keep with me, because I lost that flash drive at school... image

My advice (being Captain Obvious here) is not to keep it with you and then lose it later...

I have my system back itself up every night at 10pm to my external hard drive.

I also use either my email or Yahoo Briefcase to occasionally upload copies of my most important docs.

If you don't have backup, DON'T OPEN ANOTHER THREAD UNTIL YOU DO!!
