The hunt continues: I missed out on a coin that I have been searching for for 3 years!

While I will keep the specifics vague, as to not hype up the coin I am searching for, I was recently browsing a well-known dealers' online New Inventory.
This dealer is not well known for selling this type of coin, and my intent when browsing his list of NewP's was not focused towards this coin.

The moment I saw the coin in question I gasped. It took me totally by surprise that he would have "THE" coin I have been searching for for 3 years, and at a price 25% less than the only other example I saw in approximately the same grade. It's not by any means any expensive coin (less than $200), and only holds the contingency of a small collector base (as far as I know). BUT, the coin is rare, and to argue against it only could mean that you are hoarding this piece, or know someone else who is hoarding it.

My plan right now is to email this seller to see if, by chance, the coin was returned and I can buy it from him.

Therefore, let's hear about your long-hunted-for coins. This can be about you actually getting the coin, or about losing out like I just did image

1928-S SLQ with shooting star die break.... been looking for one for some time, never seen or heard of one outside of Cline's book. It's the only 28-S die variety that I don't have.

nowhere saw it on a web site, but it turned out to be sold. Small world.......

I've been on the hunt for an AUish 1822 Large Cent for a long time. Before I ever really thought about wanting one there was a nice PCGS AU55 on eBay. It was listed as a fixed price listing and was available for many weeks. I never pulled the trigger. That was some years ago and I've yet to see an affordable example since!

I looked for a certain coin(Vam variety) for several years and finally found it in 2008! I am familiar with that "gasp" when you finally found THE one you have searched for! image

There are three coins I have spent at least a year looking for.

I have searched auction archives going back 10 years and there were 3 of one of the coins I was looking for and 0 of the other 2.

So if anyone sees one of the 3 coins I am looking for please let me know. image

P.S. I can't tell you what they are because I don't want to get the prices artificially inflated. So it will be quite difficult to contact me when you see it. image

I can't find a nice 1888 IHC in XF/AU that meets my criteria for eye appeal that doesn't go for moon money. I see a fair number of them in many other dates go for reasonable prices, but a nice '88 always goes for a LOT more than I'm willing to pay. I'd really like to upgrade this one:

Define moon money. It seems as though this is just a tough one to find, and collectors are recognizing the difficulty in finding the quality that you, too, are after. Perhaps for this date, "reasonable" is just higher than for other dates.

I looked for a deep, bag toned San Diego commem for 3-4 years. One came up on a dealers site but I was too late, it was sold. Short time later one came up in a Heritage auction and I got it for about $75 less than my high bid. Probably toned too deep for most collectors tastes.

You may be right. I'm getting close to sucking it up and paying for it. By "moon money" I mean about twice what I usually see the other 1887-93 dates selling for in similar condition (i.e. $50+ in nice XF and close to $100 in a nice AU). I keep thinking it's just a temporary blip, but it's looking more like it's not. I can't really account for why this date seems to be harder to find like this; the only plausible thought is that maybe it's sought and hoarded by Chinese for whom the number '8' is considered good luck.

I haven't heard back from the dealer, so I suspect that this coin is gone for good.

Too bad, but I'm sure I will come across one eventually.

You should mention what kind of coin this is. Somebody might see one and give you a heads up.

My story would be about my 1853 No Arrows Quarter. Early on in putting together a PCGS slabbed 1853 year set I figured out that a No Arrows quarter was going to be tough for me. I don't have a lot of disposable income for coins and while they do come up for sale every now and then, it's mostly the high grade ones (out of my price range) that seem to turn up for sale.

I'd looked and looked for a little lower grade one but when you found them they are for the most part not slabbed and frankly just too expensive for me to buy one hoping it would slab.

Then one day a dealer posted a beautiful example here that literally made my heart flutter. It's an AU53 which was higher grade than I had targeted due to my funds.

At any rate, I contacted the dealer and he was kind enough to allow me to make payments on it and now it is the center piece of my 1853 year set.

As much as it hurt to stretch for it, I'm thrilled I did.

Sounds like my painful attempts to locate an 1848-o half dime in VF to AU grade. Took me close to 2 years to find this inexpensive coin in non-cleaned VF-XF.

A months ago I started my wait for a 1966 Iceland 2 Kronur thick planchet (Mintage of 300). Saw one on ebay a month or so ago with white spots and took everything I had to let it pass. I am at the begining of a looong wait I do believe.

In my experience, that's a tough coin to find nice in ANY grade, much less AU. Good luck with that search!

Back to the topic at hand...

"Therefore, let's hear about your long-hunted-for coins."

I've been on the hunt for an uncleaned seated dollar for my 7070 for almost 5 years now. I came close once, but TomB outbid me on the auction. image I'm still sore at myself for not going for it on that coin.

There's a specific Barber I wanted to purchase that came up for sale for the second time in my life. It was sold for money I would've easily paid for it and I didn't know about it until weeks after the sale. As a result; I haven't bought a coin in nearly two years.

I just picked one up in AGish condition last week. It and a VG 1817 large cent were among a handful of coins (1880-O Morgan, some '64 Kennedys, a 1906-D Barber dime, couple Liberty Head nickels, some wheaties, a couple IHCs, a couple other holed and plugged large cents, etc.) a guy wanted $40 for.

I hadn't ever owned a coin of any denomination from the year 1822 (or 1817), but (to provide some relevance to the original topic of this thread) I can't say that I'd been looking for one either.

The 1822 cent can sometimes be found in AU grade, but 99% of them will either have a little corrosion, or they will have dark surfaces. What is really difficult is to find a "golden biscuit" 1822 cent with choice surfaces in XF or better. I have seldom seen one, and they surely sell for moon money!

I can't seem to find a standing quarter with the Anacs certificate. Other coins from that era are relatively common such as Buffs, WL halves, lincoln cents, and Merc dimes. I have yet to find one SLQ in any grade. image
