Just got the above from PSA today!

The PSA 4 (which got me initially wizzed-off!), after examining it in it's PSA slab, I noticed about "5 waves of wrinkles" on the front. You cannot notice these wrinkles looking straight at the card, but if you rotate the item, the wrinkles are easy to see, thus PSA 4 is the result.

So this is NOT just a modern card issue, but "70 year old photo cards" can have wrinkles too! image

You are correct, but you are the first to expect every card that comes out of a modern pack to be a PSA 10. Plus, you said every card was at least an 8. All but 2 of yours were at least 8's.

I believe most of the cards did get undergraded yes, but when that 08 masterpiece Manning grades lower than my rivera rookie somnething is not right. Also when all of the cards are psa 8-10, andf the longoria is a 5 that makes you wonder...

I think we all know grades have been lower for some reason or another.

I will judge when my grades pop sometime in the next 12 months. I have 3 cards out of my sub that look steller to the rest. I looked at them over and over again with magnifying glass. If one of those are a 5 I will filp too.

    /////////////////////

I think I can safely "promise" that when you look at the
card upon its return, you will no longer "wonder" why it
    got a 5.

The so-called "wrinkles and creases" are MICROSCOPIC
and are VERY difficult to spot. But, they ARE there.

My collection of "5s that were 10s" is LARGE. I simply
missed the micro defects. It's just part of the game.

    ........

    NOTHING wrong with complaining, though.

I think PSA's graders do a wonderful job grading.

Also, a lot of you need to buy a 10x loupe. Either that
or stop submitting cards and buy them already slabbed in the grade you desire.

I've only submitted just over a hundred cards (to both PSA and SGC) and I have only been surprised by one card total (and it was a cheap card). Both companies were on-time or early and the grades were about as expected, never a EOT or rejection of any kind. A few came back a grade higher, only three came back lower than expected (2 by one grade, 1 by two grades). I've had super fortune, but I am meticulous as hell. I measure the cards , check the edges and surfaces under magnification, and at multiple angles in a dark room with a bright light. Hopefully I haven't jinxed myself by spouting off, diligence pays. As a side note, I've never sent in anything newer than 1983, so I have no first-hand knowledge of shiny cards and the like.

I am all for complaining when you have a legitimate gripe but when you missed a back crease and sent in an OC card then I dont think a thread is warranted.

    Good complaining threads

-Trimmed Jordan RC pulled out of a group rip from BBCE
-PSA grading trimmed 1975s minis from big time sellers using a known shorter color variation too trim all cards to that size. It took a whole lot of complaining to get that issue resolved.
-Rons thread about his 58s that got 6s when they should have got 7s and 8s.

those are some easy examples of good griping threads. Seeing some of the grades that popped at Chicago, those dealers should start a few threads here.

If we want to complain how about complaining about collectors who overpay for centered cards while overlooking OBVIOUS defects that make 80/20 centering awesome by comparison. Seriously this card has about 45 print marks on it and if you connect them I think it may be the face of Jesus which may explain the silly price.

Alright, since this thread has turned into a total train wreck, I'll add my two cents.

I'm so sick of the "loupe" suggestions. A loupe isn't any good if you have no idea how to use it and louping a card isn't the end-all to getting PSA 10's on modern cards. Inadequate or inappropriate louping is a fault of many and is the easiest way to get results that are more than disappointing.

There are at least 10 primary aspects to a card that need to ALWAYS be examined. There are four sides, four corners and front and back surfaces at the very least (ignoring for the moment things such as registration, print defects, implied centering on unbordered cards, etc).

The first thing that one needs to understand is that all cards are not the same and each issue will have a specific set of variables that must be considered.

When examining a card, one should learn the simple technique of candeling or angling a card to view the surface(s). This is done by viewing the card under a strong light source and tilting the card from 0 degrees to 180 degress then turning it 90 degrees and repeating the procedure. This will, upon close scrutiny, expose potential surface flaws. This should be repeated again on the reverse.

Then, the card should be examined for printing or registration flaws.

Lastly, the corners should be examined and this is the only time I would recommend the use of a loupe.

Keep in mind that a PSA 10 does not require PERFECT corners (or perfect centering) and that minute lifts may not be visible using a loupe (but would show when candeling).

So, if you can honestly say that you've performed inspection of at least 20 aspects on the front and 20 more on the back (intial and 90 degree candeling) as well as thorough examination of the 8 corners (front and back), then you MAY have a gripe. Otherwise, let's give the grader the benefit of the doubt until you can review the card again...

I've never used a loupe, then again I've never received a 10 either.

I usually send in cards from the 50's though.

Anything else IMO is a waste of time and money.

The loupe has saved me lots of money on subs of 70s cards...I've pulled a number of 10s that way, including several 1 of 1s from 1973-1979..

I think the loupe suggestion isn't geared towards getting more, higher grades more so than it is a suggestion to avoid disappointment that a naked eye lookover may miss.

Scott makes some great points, as I can say with near 100% confidence that anyone can improve their PSA 10 hit rate by 15% just by paying more attention the surface on the 'shiny stuff'. But with that said, you still do need a loupe (if you're looking to hit 10's), and if you don't have one about 20% is the best you can hope for. It doesn't matter on stuff like Finest, Bowman Chrome, or other indestructible issues, but with the paper stock cards (Bowman Heritage, etc.) you are going to submit too many cards w/ slightly rounded corners if you don't use a loupe.

Also, the point about the slight lifts is excellent, although I'd add that you also need to look for dents. Put the card up to a strong light, and see if any of the corners don't refract the light properly. You can see slight bends in the corners this way, and you won't pick that up with a loupe.

Let's see, was this thread a waste of time?

Did anyone learn anything about what to look for before a sub (...or after, did you miss something, after another closer examination)?

    surface wrinkles
    back creases
    refractor lines
    scratches in the surface gloss
technique of candling or angling a card to view the surfaces (tilting cards from 0 to 180 degrees under strong lighting)
that all cards are not the same and each issue will have a specific set of variables that must be considered
    printing or registration flaws
    other surface flaws
examining under a strong light and use of a jewelers' loop
examination of 8 corners (i.e., front and reverse)
    centering
    ...and more!

Enough of this, let's get back to complaining about complaining and just how worthless this thread was.

I thought this thread was very informative.....I know from personally experience, if you arent happy with your grades, break them out and resub....I have had 5's come back 8's that way...and that was a 1961 Fleer Basketball set where the difference between a 5 and 8 is HUGE moneywise......I have also sent rejected cards from PSA to SGC and gotten them slabbed and vice versa......it never hurts to have a 2nd opinion, especially if you feel something was missed....

Stop it... There's no sense in pointing out the informative aspect of a thread! It's much better to leave those that already know everything to skip over all of the information provided and find some useless nugget to hang an insult upon.

And in the future, I'll refer to the "procedure" as shadowing. It's more descriptive, easier to type and spell and will never be confused with chicken's eggs (any farmers will understand).

<< <i>Everyone seems to forget that this is the same guy that asked for opinions on a Peyton Manning auto card even though he is a proclaimed Manning expert. He is told on here that the auto is probably a fake. About a month later he posts it for sale on the BST board and claims he is 100% sure the auto is authentic because he got it in person. >>

I seem to remember this as well. image

Better yet....I'll offer you $50 shipped on the Longoria so long as I receive it in the PSA 5 slab. I will look it over and if I find nothing wrong, I will crack and resubmit it myself on my own dime. If it comes back a 10, I'll sell it back to you for the same $50.

    You can't lose.

anything 5 or higher is still a pretty good grade, especially older cards, but newer cards i think they know they not so rare that they do that on purpose, ive seen 5s that look like nines and 5s that look like 4s , so they are very inconsistend, and i would value anything over 5s cause mint condition means flawless, and that is hard to do, i only got a few 10s and many 5-6s

If there wasn't a limit, that would so be in my sig line because I don't think, based upon my time here, which has been quite a few years, I don't think I've seen a sentence this long but at least he did use commas, which do make the reading a tad better even though it's still kinda long, don't you think?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
