    Link?

Edited to add: freaking page 12 of 12 of the search for 1843. Nothing turns up with "half farthing." The description is "G.BRITAIN 1843 1/2P NGC MS65BN."

I just love coin dealers who haven't the faintest clue of the coin they're selling. Equally laughable are the continued TPG denomination gaffes; 1/2P, indeed. image

And, while I'm at it, Vic's cheek looks a tad 'busy' for a 65, IMHO. It is at least devoid of the ubiquitous flyspeck problems usually seen on these bits. image

I like the coin. Hell, I even toyed with buying it. Except that Krause has an UNC flavor at $125. So is coin worth the extra $225? Seems a little steep. I hear there is a recession on... image

The seller has some really nice stuff but his prices tend to be beyond optimistic. This is a $10 coin. Maybe $30 on a good day with a bidding war, but no way is it worth $230.

  • << <i>Krause has an UNC flavor at $125. So is coin worth the extra $225? >>

If Krause's UNC implies MS60, then yes, you betcha it is. But if UNC implies M63, then maybe not. The price of $350 is 2.8 times $125, and I commonly find coins grading MS65 going for 5 (or more) times the price of MS60 and over twice the price of MS63.

My 2008 copy of Spink lists it at £80 ($117 ish) in Unc, where as it lists an 1843 Halfpenny as £385 in Unc.

If it was a Halfpenny as per title it would be a bargain. Even though its a lovely 1/2 farthing and I would love to add it to my collection I personally think the price is a bit too high.

BTW, the seller is a new member around these parts, seen posting on the lightside.
Formerly worked with R M Smythe and everyone that I've seen post about the seller on the other side gives him top marks!

    Doug,

I agree that the cheek is a little busy for a 65, but the clean fields and stunning MS67ish reverse with full strike bumped it i'd say. I think this ranked high on the eye appeal, which is 20% (or is it 30%) on how NGC and PCGS calcuates when grading.

WOW! That's an amazing coin, even though it is THE commonest date.If it was the 1853 one, then that would be a real floordropper.

The 1/4 & 1/3 Farthings are also a very difficult coin series to find as well.

It's a nice piece and a heckuva picture of it. Too rich for me, though.

Love the coin, and it fits with my core collection, but my offers of $250 and $275 were autodeclined. Oh well... my MS64 RB will have to do. *shrug*

P.S. All of my fractional farthings are on their way to Mark Goodman for imaging right now, so I should have all sorts of nice pics to share within a few weeks.

    I'm your huckleberry. image

On a much smaller coin to boot.

One of the coins I've sent to Mark is an 1854 1/2 Farthing in MS66 BN... I can't wait
to see what the pics look like, as I've never been able to image it worth a darn.

    Ehh?

    Try relisted at $20 higher.

Lowest he said he would go is $310 off eBay, which I declined... I know, I know, willing to go $275 but not $310??? Gotta draw the line somewhere. Keep in mind that it catalogs $90 in UNC. For a 66 or 67 I might stretch it, or if the obverse weren't quite as chattered. Also appears to be some flatness of strike on the obverse.

    Reverse is drop-dead gorgeous though...

Sorry, I saw the listing as "ended." There were two offers both declined. I just assumed someone hit the BIN button.

Listed $20 higher? Higher than that inflated $350? Sheesh. I flagged the seller as a favorite in my eBay account. Now I have to go delete a favorite seller - I wonder where the button in the new Ebay interface for that is?

PCGS MS64 RB. Decidedly undergraded IMO.
  • definitely undergraded, looks more like a ms66 or 67 to me. Want to sell it?

He's relisting them higher? image These type of coins, (his world inventory) as high grade as they might be, often show no reserve on ebay by Greg or others. Pass.

I appreciate the offer, but no. I get a couple of inquiries every year, and this is one that I simply will not part with for the foreseeable future. I collect the fractional farthings by date and this is one of the jewels of my collection.

I've sold off the majority of my Darkside material over the last 2 years, but the fractional farthings stay with me.

Not to mention that I wouldn't sell the coin at any price even remotely approaching reasonable... 20x Krause UNC would not buy the coin.

I just love it too much. image

Our prices are based on several factors, including changing efficiencies of the marketplace, and a desire to stock eye candy. We didn't raise the price intentionally; the prices on everything went up as a consequence of higher eBay fees. In particular, our high-eye-appeal foreign coins act as cheap window dressing, and as such, are not high on the list for discounts.

Chisel me on some US, instead!

PS. We have an AU58 coin which is nearly as beautiful which I could send you on approval at a much more reasonable price.

It's a great coin and it is not eazy to get that grade out of NGC!
