when I used to powerlift I preferred Pantera and Hatebreed. Now I can't lift so coin collecting is my only hobby. I chill with my 19th century types with a tall cup of plain black Starbuck's Expresso and a dose of Norah Jones and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
For numismatic research? Try Brahms (especially his third symphony). When I am having trouble writing, this is the piece that I listen to most often. It is my personal favorite.
Anything with an Adagio (walking) tempo is good background for studying or research. I often play background music with that tempo for my classes. Surprisingly effective.
The Rolling Stones. You have to admire a man who has not combed his hair since 1965.
Always took candy from strangers Didn't wanna get me no trade Never want to be like papa Working for the boss every night and day --"Happy", by the Rolling Stones (1972)
Coinosaurus, It all depends on which Mary Chapin songs you're listening to. Many of her tunes are superb. Her recent work is scattered with gems. I think she has freed herself from the need to be a commercial success.
I like using a favorite song as a mantra, letting it play on repeat. This can take you beyond the song into a space that may well be conducive to academic research

Try some Trace Adkins if you're looking for something more sophisticated. He also has wedding advice.

<< <i>I have Mary Chapin Carpenter on right now and she is not helping very much. >>
Grateful Dead works for just about everything. I would rather shave my head with a cheese grater than listen to MCC.

When the book comes out, you can blame the parts you don't like on MCC
