If I found someone that wanted to sell a collection like that I would act a little more respectful than Mr. Rosen, both to the seller and to his collection, but in the end I would probably offer the same amount or less. Obviously I would take a lot more time and go over everything with a fine tooth comb, but I'm also no where near as knowledgeable about the different sets and memorabilia as he is. I'd also probably be really giddy, like a kid in a candy store, because I've never been around a collection like that.
I think what you guys are forgetting is that the seller went to Rosen and that the seller has the right to say no to any offer or make a counter offer. If Rosen had offered $40,000 and the seller would have said "yes" I still don't see where he did anything wrong, other than the obvious careless handling of the cards.
I have no issue with the amount paid.. I am all about a great deal more the manner in how he carries himself.. very arrogant.. throwing the jersey to the side.. after the guy just got done telling you a story that was personal to him. Have some class put it on a hanger and ask your son to hang it up. and asking the guy how many balls he has?? come on.. I felt embarrassed and I am all about dirty humor.. but you need to have more of a relationship before you act like that know your audience.. that was something a 14 yr old would say to impress his buddies.. which is exactly how he looked when he looked at the camera.. like it was funny that the guy didn't "get it"

This ^ is spot on. People may think he's unprofessional, a d-bag, or whatever but at the end of the day, he pays in cash and moves on.
No one is twisting the Seller's arm (and this includes other Rosen "victims"). They could research and see how much they are leaving on the table. I'm sure there are times when someone needed money ASAP and Rosen pounced on the situation with cold, hard cash.

Though I'm not quite as old as the guy in the clips with Al, I can share a similar perspective as to why the old guy was probably thrilled by the $80,000 that he received.
1st of all, like a couple of you have mentioned, the old guy probably didn't have much at all invested in his entire collection. And, at his age, he might not have needed to sell, but simply wanted to, because his interest had waned a bit.
I started collecting Mantle cards during the mid-50s and still need a few more to complete my PSA #4 Master Mantle Registry Set. I have never paid more than $15 for any of them in my life. My first 52 Topps Mantle cost me a nickel. The last Mantle card that I added to my set was obtained through a trade with a fellow Mantle collector. The only Mantle I've ever sold was to Mike (mickeymantle24).
My point is that, if the day ever came that I'd need to sell my collection, I wouldn't feel cheated if I was offered $300,000 or so by Mr. Mint or anyone else for that matter. I'm not saying that I want to give it away, I'm just saying that I wouldn't feel cheated, regardless of current market prices, because I simply don't have that much invested. We have over 600 autographed items and every one of them have been IPs and the highest we ever paid for one, was $50 for a Joe D'Maggio back in 1975.
It seemed to me that the old guy in the clips wasn't too concerned about Al rough-housing his cards, even though I cringed at times, too; he appeared to have only one thing in mind and that was to get rid of his collection.
As many of you know, my wife was killed in an automobile accident a few years ago. Since her death, my 4 sons and I have pondered, many times, whether or not to sell our 45 year sports collection (minus the Mantles!). I know two collectors in TN that met with him at each of their homes(late 80s) and one sold everything and the other kicked him outta of his house selling nothing. This was in the Shelbyville area of TN. They both told me " he was a complete jerk" about the cards and conditions. When the camera is not on he pulls cards that are lesser grade and throws them out of the pages. I think the man is a genius in many ways but I would bet he left plenty of collections behind because his antics. That little old man they treated him like a person with a very low IQ and it was rude in my eyes.

So when you make a really good buy, you tell the Seller he left a lot money on the table, right? When you come across a large collection, rather than negotiating for a quanity discount, you offer full price on the individual cards, right?

Rosen is a jerk and always has been. I have dealt with him on many unopened purchases and he is always classless and arrogant. I only bought from him becuase he always had the good unopened stuff. The final straw was when he did the R.I. show a couple of years ago and I brought my 8 year old daughter with me. After explaining who he was(a big time hobby dealer, etc), she was excited to see what he had to say about the hobby. I asked him amongst other things if he still collected...his response "only dead presidents--cash!. I could care less about this hobby, it is all about making money".

I have never dealt with him again, and my wife and kids are under strict orders to never sell to him if I roll a 7.

My first impression was that the seller got ripped, but then I'm thinking these cards are stuffed into the pages back to back, 2 cards per slot. Not much care taken. So most probably were VG-EX. And we're missing something if I saw this right. Rosen said something about "you're already at 35 to 50" before he sat down, so he was already paying for something other than cards?

I had this same exact feeling. I have seen Rosen's act so many times and it made me sick. He treats people's prized possesions like cans of tomatoes at the grocery store and acts like his excrement does not stink! I have not been able to stomach this guy in years and I for one will celebrate when he leaves our hobby and moves onto something else!!

Wow this is taking off since last night. There are two very seperate points being made here.
1. Allens professionalism - From what I have seen at shows he is not professional at all. Maybe even a social disorder or his parents never taught him manners.
2. If the guy selling the collection got riped off. - He went to Rosen and accepted his offer. Was it fair market value? We will never know because we dont know what was all included in the sale.
Putting Al Rosen in front of a camera was the first mistake. He's going to play shrewd business man because that's the part he has to play...but he's enough of an egomaniac that adding a camera to the mix just means he's going to try to win an Oscar in the process.
Either way, great people skills and business ethic on his behalf.

I agree with this. I stated in my first post that he treated the guys' collection like it was junk. I would have thrown him out the minute he started throwing binders and jersey's.
However, I think its his right as a buyer to offer whatever the hell he wants to offer and then its up to the seller to decide if he wants to take the offer or not.

We know what went down - the seller should have consigned the cards to an ebay consignment seller, paid around 10% commission fees, and frankly, for this amount of volume I might have done it for 5%, and made the old man a heckuva lot more money than he made.
The old man got ripped off...does Rosen have a right to do that?...yes he does and repeat...the old man got ripped off - it's quite obvious.

I agree, I'm not sure why people are outraged at the 80k offer. The seller had every right to contact multiple buyers and do competitive quoting, so I'm not sure why Rosen is being blamed for his offer. As for Mr. Rosen himself, I've only met and talked with him once and he treated me fine, so I'll form my opinion of him based on my own personal interaction. With that being said, I was cringing watching him yank cards out of the sleeves and flipping the pages. Maybe he didn't damage them, but whenever I handle someone else's collection, it is a lot more careful than that.

Theoretically, I get the point about the handling of the binders, but what motivation would the buyer have to damage the cards and potentially reduce his profit margin in the process? He wanted to buy them and turn them for a profit. I don't know the buyer, but he seems experienced, and therefore, I doubt he did anything to the binders and pages that he thought would damage the cards. Clearly he was insensitive by his actions, though.
As to what percent of market value dealers usually offer, I've read on these boards in the past that it's 20 to 30 percent. My understanding for the low percentage is that this is what the dealer/buyer feels they need to pay in order to reasonably ensure that they can make a profit. My local card dealer has quoted me such percentages as well, and I've heard these percentages mentioned by friends who have taken card collections to dealers to get an offer. In other words, for better or for worse, this (20 to 30 percent) seems to be the going rate.
I agree that it was a shame the way the buyer treated the seller. IMO, the buyer should have shown the seller some respect, especially being in the seller's house. I'm tempted to say that the seller should have kicked the buyer out of the house for the disrespect, but coming from the Midwest originally, I can see where this might have been difficult. However, having lived on the East Coast for nearly 15 years now, I wouldn't hesitate to ask such a rude person to leave.
And around 20 - 25 cents on the dollar is what many dealers shoot for in a situation like this - so Rosen paying $80,000 means this is worth at least $320,000.

I'm not saying that I want to give it away, I'm just saying that I wouldn't feel cheated, regardless of current market prices, because I simply don't have that much invested. We have over 600 autographed items and every one of them have been IPs and the highest we ever paid for one, was $50 for a Joe D'Maggio back in 1975.
It seemed to me that the old guy in the clips wasn't too concerned about Al rough-housing his cards, even though I cringed at times, too; he appeared to have only one thing in mind and that was to get rid of his collection.
As many of you know, my wife was killed in an automobile accident a few years ago. Since her death, my 4 sons and I have pondered, many times, whether or not to sell our 45 year sports collection (minus the Mantles!). Like the old man in the clips, when I'm ready to sell ... someone will get a heck of a buy! It might even be Al Rosen

I know two collectors in TN that met with him at each of their homes(late 80s) and one sold everything and the other kicked him outta of his house selling nothing. This was in the Shelbyville area of TN. They both told me " he was a complete jerk" about the cards and conditions. When the camera is not on he pulls cards that are lesser grade and throws them out of the pages. I think the man is a genius in many ways but I would bet he left plenty of collections behind because his antics. That little old man they treated him like a person with a very low IQ and it was rude in my eyes.
You guys saw the WELL MANNERED MR. MINT on camera IMHO.
Did 80K buy everything in that home sports related? I can assure you that he did miss somethings I saw him flip through the 87-88 Basketball sets and actually pause at the donruss golf sets and say nothing about them.

So when you make a really good buy, you tell the Seller he left a lot money on the table, right? When you come across a large collection, rather than negotiating for a quanity discount, you offer full price on the individual cards, right?
You say, "Hey, I can sell these cards for 10x the amount I paid. You really should cancel the transaction because, well, that's just how I roll. chaz"

I had this same exact feeling. I have seen Rosen's act so many times and it made me sick. He treats people's prized possesions like cans of tomatoes at the grocery store and acts like his excrement does not stink! I have not been able to stomach this guy in years and I for one will celebrate when he leaves our hobby and moves onto something else!!

1. Allens professionalism - From what I have seen at shows he is not professional at all. Maybe even a social disorder or his parents never taught him manners.
2. If the guy selling the collection got riped off. - He went to Rosen and accepted his offer. Was it fair market value? We will never know because we dont know what was all included in the sale.

I agree, I'm not sure why people are outraged at the 80k offer. The seller had every right to contact multiple buyers and do competitive quoting, so I'm not sure why Rosen is being blamed for his offer. As for Mr. Rosen himself, I've only met and talked with him once and he treated me fine, so I'll form my opinion of him based on my own personal interaction. With that being said, I was cringing watching him yank cards out of the sleeves and flipping the pages. Maybe he didn't damage them, but whenever I handle someone else's collection, it is a lot more careful than that.

agreed.. i dont know of ANY ebay consignment sellers at that rate.. or even 10%..

and im not against paying 20% on the dollar if someone wants to unload some stuff (especially such a large lot), have me fly out to meet him and pay in cash, so my money will be tied up until i can then do the work to re-sell the stuff and turn a profit..
As to what percent of market value dealers usually offer, I've read on these boards in the past that it's 20 to 30 percent. My understanding for the low percentage is that this is what the dealer/buyer feels they need to pay in order to reasonably ensure that they can make a profit. My local card dealer has quoted me such percentages as well, and I've heard these percentages mentioned by friends who have taken card collections to dealers to get an offer. In other words, for better or for worse, this (20 to 30 percent) seems to be the going rate.
I agree that it was a shame the way the buyer treated the seller. IMO, the buyer should have shown the seller some respect, especially being in the seller's house. I'm tempted to say that the seller should have kicked the buyer out of the house for the disrespect, but coming from the Midwest originally, I can see where this might have been difficult. However, having lived on the East Coast for nearly 15 years now, I wouldn't hesitate to ask such a rude person to leave.
