.........great gift I just received from a good friend.

I've heard of the "Liberty Dollars" but never seen one. Didn't the producers/minters of those get raided? I'm also curious, with a face value of $1, how does that compare with the price of copper (I know, I could look that up, but if you happen to know off the top of your head...)? What are the dimensions of one ounce of copper? Just curious I guess...are those hard to come by? Okay enough questions, cool present I'd say image.

I suppose it would depend upon the current exchange rate of Liberty Dollars to US Dollars. By the way, where is Liberty anyway, and can I immigrate, now that the US has become significantly more socialist of late?
  • I have not measured the coin but I feel sure it is the size of a silver dollar.

This is something I never thought I would actually have. I could not be more happy!!

The best ones were the Ron Paul Dollars. The main headquarters for the operation was in Asheville, NC. I think it is now in Indiana. Here is the link to their site. Feds apparently didn't like someone other than them selling bullion to the masses and using it as coinage....

There are several places in Asheville that have signs saying they take the Liberty Dollar as currency. The feds decided to pick on them also.

So what ever happened to the Van Nauthouse (or how ever you spell the guy's name)? Did he go to jail? Last I read the feds had his gold and silver and a bunch of medals and all of his paperwork, but had not pressed charges. Is that still the case or has he been indicted?

Updates are on his site. The Feds will find some way of putting him in jail or keeping his gold and silver.... They need to make some more Silver Eagles!

It shows how behind the curve I am on these things. I've never heard of them before. Interesting.

This is what we should be using in America now..... I think they are ahead of the curve... I also love the look of the coins.

I think they are interesting. The only thing that bothers me about them is that they will not take them in trade, you have to use US currency to buy them. In other words, they won't take their own product, but charge you multiples of face for them when you buy them. I don't really like that.image

They used to do that and even had a paper note that you could cash in. When the Feds hit them they stopped the program and plan on restarting it soon...

I don't believe I can reprint the entire article here because of copyright laws, but...

I read an article about this recently in Coin World - Vol. 49, Issue 2537 - Week of 11/24/2008, Page 70:

Judge extends stay for Liberty Dollars case
    by Paul Gilkes

A federal court judge on October 21, 2008 denied a motion by supporters and distributors of the private Liberty Dollars to unseal court documents investigators used to seize more than $3 million in precious metals from a depository in Idaho in 2007.

The government is arguing the seized property is subject to forfeiture based on prosecutorial claims that the Liberty Dollar compete with U.S. currency. (translation: Don't screw with the Federal Reserve!)

Federal prosecutors are still in the midst of a criminal investigation alleging mail and wire fraud, counterfeiting and money laundering related to the production and use of the Liberty Dollar medallions.

(Please note that this is just portions of the whole article)(Italicized text is my comments)

I would suggest putting these away and only trading them for cash or other coins. I also believe that these will become highly collectible if these unfortunate folks lose their case.

I translate it like this... abuse of power... Well I say that not knowing the whole story. It seems to me that the Feds do not want us going back to a Gold or Silver standard of money and anyone that tries to do it gets hammered. Again, I don't know the whole story but something just seems strange..
  • Well I am very happy to have this one.
I never imagined I would get one and a friend sent to me.

    I am super pleased!!!!
