Need help with acetone

I want to acetone the following coin beofre sending it in. What exactly should I expect the acetone to strip away? Should I acetone it? and is any acetone from the pharmacy good? Any other tips would be great.

Why acetone it? It won't take off any of the toning if that's what you're trying to do. It might take off some of the dirt in the protected areas....but I'd just leave it alone.

Acetone will only remove organic material. Good for removing harmful stuff like PVC etc...

Everything else will not be affected.

edited: BTW that's a nice looking coin.

Wouldn't touch it. You're likely to come out much worse than you started. It's quite attractive now.

I typically rinse coins in acetone before submitting. Even if I can't see some PVC or glue or other easily-removed residue, I want to make sure the PCGS graders, who are way better at this than I am, can't see some residue either. Also, in case something could develop while in the holder, the acetone rinse proactively removes it. We've all seen PVC goo in holders and I know the TPGs didn't entomb the coins that way.

Just rinse it with pure acetone from the hardware store, let it dry, then submit. It won't affect the toning.

Don't lite a match when cleaning it or the coin will come out darker than it is. Also you might lose some eyebrows and a ear.

I like the look of the coin as it is now too but when i ran a qtip over it to remove some dust, the cotton got blackened. Im thinking i need to do soemthing?

The pictures are a bit juiced though. Not in a deceptive way. The coin looks very much like the picture depicts. But in hand the yellow looks more like a natural golden tone than the picture might indicate.

If you have photoshop you can fix that by reducing the saturation. Much easier to do if your camera can output RAW files rather than .jpg.

I prefer not to use a cotton swab when I rinse coins in acetone. Bad things can happen...I'm a pessimist about that stuff.

OK I went for it. Swabbed some black stuff off after dipping it in acetone. Brought out some luster and some brightness in the colors of the coin. I must say im pleased with the results. I just hope the coin doesnt melt overnight.

Acetone will not eat the metal. Acetone is used extensively in metal cleaning operations.

I remember some sand fleas were chomping down and eating it away..

As others have said acetone will not hurt.
Just be careful! I don't particularly like acetone any more than the next guy.
But after you see hundreds of coins ruined by pvc and other contaminants you come to view it as
an unfortunate necessity. A few of your prized coins turning green in top tier holders will change your mind
about the evils of acetone.

Most acetone is contaminated and you need a distilled water rinse before it dries or you can get a film of contamination.

Wow, I always thought acetone removed toning! I've never used acetone on a toned coin though so I didn't know. I have some silver quarters I want to throw in my whitman but one has splotchy black spots, can I get rid of those some how assuming they're toned spots?

The first pic is the sellers who I believe uses some contrasting effects to show the condition of the coin?
The latter is mine. I t is unedited and is exactly what the coin looks like in hand in flourescent light after the acetone, which i think is a great looking coin. The acetone brought out some of the purples and blues you see out of the black which i was very pleased with. Im not saying the original seller juices his pics per se. I feel his coins always come out to look as they are pictured(i bought a couple from him) but the contrasting does give them a cartoonish look, but i think it helps with seeing the surface conditions.
