Should a card in a holder be this loose?

Sorry about the large scan, but I thought it was the best way to show what I was talking about. I just got this card off Ebay and upon opening it I noticed the card was sliding around in the holder. The scan does not show it, but it moves left and right too. And as you can see on the bottom, there is an acre of space! Is this because the holder is an older one? Should I send it in to be reholdered? I just plan on putting it on a shelf on display, but I will be worrying about damage each time I move it. Just seems to me to have too much space available for the card to move. Or am I way off here?

The only other option, I think, would be to send it back to PSA for a reholder. I think you would have to describe the problem and request that he be re-slabbed in an inner "mylar sleeve." I have a few PSA cards that use the inner mylar sleeve due to the fact the card does not quite fit any holder. Hope that helps.

I've got lots of loose graded cards and some that look like they've been shoe-horned into the holder. I even have a 63 Ditka that is in a larger sized (ie 1955 bowman) with a soft plastic sleeve that keeps it in place. Don't know if they will re-holder for free, you may have to pay for it.

Did you buy it from one of the large submitters? I noticed the same thing on a bunch I won last week. I lined up a raw card to compare the size through the slab, and the slabbed card is smaller than the raw.

Alot of PSA cards float around inside the slabs. I have lots of them like that so I know the feeling of not wanting to handle them too much to avoid possible damage.

I also have tons of them that slide around that I subbed so I know they are not trimmed.

I am not saying for a fact that your card is or isn't trimmed but I would say it's safe bet that it is not trimmed.

I don't think the seller was a large submitter, this was the only graded card they had for bid.

    Matt,

Thanks for that information. I don't have many graded cards so I was not sure if what I was seeing was normal. The thought of a haircut had crossed my mind, but I think your right. And knowing that you have submitted cards
that have come back floating makes me feel better too.

I guess I will just keep it as is. I have seen the sleeves they use sometimes, I actually prefer to not have it in one. Maybe it's me, but I prefer the look of the card without the sleeve.

You could always send it in for review. And the beautiful thing is that if it ends up getting a new holder, you get a better grade... Looks like it has an outside shot at an 8.5, especially with the absence of the scoring mark. Good luck.

Why doesn't PSA look into investing in a better holder that is tamperproof and will prevent the card from moving around? As you all know, we have been having more and more issues with PSA slabs being tampered with by scammers. Have any of you guys ask Joe about this stuff? Does anyone know if they are planning on making any changes to the slabs?

    An improved slab would help.
